In today's Advent series installment, Andrew preaches John 3:17-21 to show that there is no way but redemption. No human-centered religion, work, or ritual can get anyone into heaven. Church is not about behavior modification or earning anything from God.

Is it right for a teacher of the Bible to accept payment for what God has made freely available, His word? If a "pastor" is paid, does the church have a right to create a job description? We do not only ask these questions today. They were likely being asked in the First Century in Corinth. Paul answers us explicitly.

We cannot partake in the cup of Christ and of demons. Paul admonishes those in the local church who are communing with demons and calling it Christianity, defending Christian liberty and saying, "Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God."

Paul encourages the outcast and admonishes the cult.

While admonishing the local church in Corinth toward unity, Paul addresses a question about spiritual gifts and reveals the purpose of our spiritual gifts in the New Testament local church.

Today, we continue through 1 Corinthians and see Paul's instruction for speaking in tongues and prophecy when practiced in the local church gathering. Edification instead of self-exaltation.

It is not wrong to desire a manifestation of the Holy Spirit in our gatherings. The spiritual gifts can easily become idolatry for us and breed much division. There is a better way.

Paul admonishes the church to identify with sinners rather than condemn or ostracize them. Sadly, many groups who refer to themselves as religious are too puffed up to identify with sinners. They only identify with themselves. What the Bible describes as godly living is, to worldly people, not very pious.

In 1517, Martin Luther questioned the works-righteousness that was being taught by the Roman Catholic Church. Today, we ask the same questions.

Today with the DRC community. There is so much "religion" that keeps people weak, when God's desire is to develop strong consciences in His people through correct knowledge of His word. When God's people are edified, they are free.
