We all struggle with “ shoulds ” - the idea of promoting “self-made religion”. It is my observation that some personalities struggle with the “shoulds” of legalism more. The use of the word “should” in our thoughts and speech is an indication that we are functioning in a cycle of condemnation and shame…

Introduction: For those of you who don’t know, this is the Washington Monument in Washington DC. When people go to see it, they are amazed by it’s shear size. In this sermon we are picking up in Colossians 2:16-17 , which speaks of three types of heresies the Colossians were in danger of being captivated by: the Judaizers, the pagan worship, and self-made rules. These were taking their focus from being centered in Jesus. We are to hold fast to Jesus, our substance…

Jesus did not follow the Pharisaic fasting practices because they mourned the loss of the Temple and in him the New Temple, the Bridegroom, was here. He did did indicate that a new-age appropriate fasting would develop after his "removal." Thus there should be no wholesale dropping of tradition as has happened sometimes in the Church, but examination and discernment by competent authorities, not just to drop things, but to see if this or that pious practice no longer has the appropriate effect in this current age and culture of the Church AND if new practices would convey the same effect. Examples are given from penitential disciplines and choices that this priest has made.

Paul disciplines his life and gives up rights for the sake of others, even others living in ignorance. Jesus tells us that our choice to use material goods in love rather than collect them for ourselves, believing demonic lies and making ourselves the center, determines the kingdom we enter. So our asceticism during the great fast is freeing us to live in love and see the Jesus we meet in prayer and worship in our neighbor rather than othering the neighbor and serving what we think is ourselves. The choice and our fate is ours.

Don’t Be Fooled Colossians 2:16–19 (ESV) 16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism…

Asceticism is not about giving up the goods God has put in the world, but about disciplining our passions so that we are not bound by our passions in this age but are free to already experience "putting on" our Lord Jesus Christ. Paul gives us the principles and Jesus gives us three examples of areas in which we can be free from bondage and directed to ultimate ends.

CODE WORD I want to talk this morning as we begin about something that we all experienced as children. It’s also something we’ve all learned to do with our kids or grandkids (if you have them). What is that something? That something is “the look”. You know “the look .” As children we see "the look” and…

This is an expository sermon unpacking 1 Timothy 4:1–6. The central argument is that since apostasy and heresy characterise the later times, a crucial measure of a good church and a good pastor is that they be alert watchmen and pastoral theologians.
