Followers of Jesus are called/commanded to submit to the governments of our lands, do good, and give them honor as they fulfill the purpose for which they have been established by God.

Who has Authority and why does it matter or Who are you to tell me what to do?

Today, political division is at it’s worst. Sadly it often even affects the church & how we treat one another. By contrast, the Word of God calls Christians to honor & submit to earthly governing authorities, the only exception being if they call us to forsake God & His Word. We honor & submit not for their sakes, but for the Lord’s sake. If Christ is our King, than we must submit to His call to submit to & honor temporary earthly authorities in this world, until the true & eternal King returns

After a full chapter and a half of reminding believers of their heavenly citizenship, challenging them to live according to their calling and election, and calling them toward a Word-focused, gospel-driven lifestyle, why does Peter now bring up our relation toward earthly governments? Join us as we find that true freedom in Christ liberates us toward a humble submission that isn’t man-centered or politically-motivated, but “for the Lord’s sake.”
