This week, we grieve another senseless national tragedy, as a domestic terrorist opened fire on 22,000 concertgoers in Las Vegas. In the light of such unpredictable violence, it's easy to retreat further into our shells, to trust nobody. We don't want to be vulnerable, to be hurt. Over time, it’s easy to get jaded or even cynical. But true depth in relationships – true intimacy – requires us to be vulnerable.

Jesus' earthly ministry is coming to a close. Judas has plotted to betray Him. Out of His love for His disciples, He chooses one last lesson in their discipleship; He washes their feet. A powerful metaphor for those of us who call ourselves Followers of Jesus.

Our passages give us two pictures, the first one of an ongoing sacrifice that is taken up in the new sacrifice, but in both of which a male who has not mated is taken and it is eaten as food for a journey and the blood is protection, a freeing from death. The second is Jesus’ taking the place of a slave and washing the feet of the disciples showing what love looks like. He is still doing that today. But he presents it as a model of leadership for this Church - the leaders love, which means taking a lower place while still conscious of their authority and appointment and cleaning up the messes of the others.
