The immaculate conception was necessitate by the failure of Eve but is not directly addressed in scripture. Yet the failure of Eve meant that the first one whom God chose in Jesus to be holy and without blemish is the one to whom the angel says “the Lord is with you” who are “full of grace” long before you could be aware and therefore she could say yes to God and implicitly “no” to Satan and thus by the Spirit give birth to a Son without original sin. This is what we contemplate in contemplating the Immaculate Conception.

God worked out his plan that started in Eden by giving his grace to Mary at her conception so that she could be the holy Mother of God. The same God has plans for us if we say yes to him and allow him to make us holy in Christ.

Jesus is the Savior of the world sent by God to save His people from their sins.

It is tempting at Christmas to paste on a smile, fake Christmas cheer, and pretend like everything's perfect. People have even done this with Jesus' family in the near-deification of Mary. In stark contrast, Jesus' family tree is full of every kind of human brokenness, exemplified in characters like: Dave, Abe, Jake and Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, ... all the way down to Mary and Joseph. Jesus brings perfection in the very middle of our brokenness. No matter how messed up you are, no matter how far away, your next step is Christ-mass... your next step is Jesus.
