Our perspective influences everything we do, including how we respond to God's mission. Jonah, a prophet from the land of Israel, hears Yahweh issuing him a proclamation to preach to his enemies - the Ninevites. Rather than listening to God and teaching a message of repentance and abiding in God's presence. Jonah takes a different route and flees from God's mission to save the Gentiles. Will we walk in the footsteps of Jonah, or we follow the ways of Christ? If we have a biblical perspective, the church will listen to God, preach the truth, and abide in God's presence.

Just as the book of Jonah will have us to rejoice in the steadfast love and compassion of the Lord, so it also seeks to instill a right fear of the Lord within our hearts. In this passage, we see how God works to bless us with a right fear of him, exposing us to the power of his majesty, revealing the impotence of lesser saviors, and saving those who are perishing.

The book of Jonah is about the long-suffering God of Creation, who reigns over the nations in unstoppable power and authority. It’s the story about the Lord of the universe, who appoints the comings and goings of prophets, sailors, kings, and peasants. It’s a book about the heart of God, who does not delight in the death of the wicked, but who also enforces perfect justice, while showing undeserved mercy.
