We're going back to Bible College to unpack the details behind the plagues account in Exodus. Welcome to Plagues 101! Mankind has always been tempted to look past the Creator and worship creation. The Egyptians fell into this trap as well. God uses Pharaoh's hardened heart to pour out a calculated attack on every Egyptian false god. One by one, they all fall until the only one left standing, is Pharaoh. In the end, we see that what is created should lead us to the Creator, then to the Cross.

Who Is Your God?

In Exodus 11 God gave Pharaoh his final warning through Moses, predicting exactly what was about to happen in the tenth plague. We see God’s sovereignty here. Being sovereign means that he rules and reigns over and is in control of and is before all things. God is sovereign over the future, over his enemies (like Pharaoh), over our hearts, over everything! He is sovereign and all his plans will come to pass, that he might receive glory.

God’s plagues on Egytp

The Lord moves on behalf of his people against those who would oppress them.

In the plagues, God demonstrates his power over Pharaoah/Egypt, over Satan, over all creation, over false gods, and over our idols. Additionally we see him set apart his people and disguise between them and the people of Egypt. Finally God exhibits his patient grace in the midst of the plagues. He is truly slow to anger. His wrath is measured, he doesn't just fly off the handle. And in his patient grace his desire is that everyone might turn to faith in Jesus Christ.

The Exodus is the defining act of salvation in the Old Testament, all of it pointing forward to Jesus. This week we look at the Passover and death of the firstborn. Jesus is the final Passover Lamb. Jesus takes God’s wrath for our sin. He takes away our sin. And Jesus leads us to freedom.
