We all follow someone. But how do we chose who we'll follow? What's the criteria? In this week's passage, Paul challenges the Philippian church to follow and imitate him. Is he being arrogant or is there something more behind his request? Moreover, how will his words impact who we should follow or imitate?

In this world we’re bombarded with temptation to focus on ourselves. Our status, popularity, career, authority, position, wealth, security, time, race, nationality, sexuality, feelings, thoughts, identity. All of these used by Satan to bring our focus off of Jesus and onto ourselves. Religious Leaders were bringing a works-based teaching into the Philippian church. Match this with a Philippian culture striving for status and position, it was a recipe for disaster. Paul addresses the problem.

The narratives of healings in Luke show Jesus reversing worldly status and making trust in him the only way to healing. Both healings flow from the cross, showing us that identification with the cross and therefore humility is what brings us to identification with Jesus, the only true status and way to healing. It is not us, but him and his cross.

Our status is not something that we earn but something that is given us through our commitment to Jesus or through a decision of our host. We should live in humble gratitude for any status we have

We are meant to serve God by serving others. Let’s find our significance in that today.

When we fight over our leadership, we aren't showing the world the messages that unites us. Our allegiance should be to Christ and his global churhc, not to the specific people who lead us.
