The first table of the law governs our relationship to the God of life, the second table governs our relationship to the gift of life. The gift of human life is something we not only hold individually, it is also something we hold together. These commandments foster human flourishing in this world. The fifth commandment deals with the structured relationships of human life, for example parents/children, husband/wife, master/servant, church/believer.

Are we required to follow the Old Testament “Ten Commandments” given from God to Moses? Were they just for the Israelites, or for our time too?

The fall and curse brought about a new reality, one that led to the eighth commandment. It recognizes four principles - Scarcity and Poverty and the answers to those - Responsibility and Charity. The beauty of the 8th commandment is the way God so perfectly balances all the variables of our fallen condition in this fallen world in a way that enhances human flourishing without any oppression.
