Ordinary Time
Peter H. Davids • Peter H. Davids • Sermon • • 4 views
We talk about discipleship, but our readings lay out the life of Jesus as a life of testing and then victimhood as our ransom. Only then do they introduce James and John wanting to be great and Jesus asking if they can share his baptism and cup, his testing and passion. When they say, Yes, he responds that they will share his suffering and then goes on to generalize: whoever wants to be great should become like him, the servant of all and the slave of all, especially in giving his life as a ransom for many. That is discipleship, so when you feel the pain and the test, thank Jesus that he is making you like him so that you can also share his glory.
Byzantine Catholic Homilies

Luke presents Jesus as a baby born to peasants in contrast to Caesar Augustus. Yet it is Jesus who is given the titles of Augustus, savior and Lord. Hebrews describes Jesus as the Son of God who has more authority and power than we can imagine, who even in the manger upholds all the worlds. And yet he is the priest who will offer himself and only after making that purification would he take his throne on high. We follow the humble Jesus now so that we can follow the exalted Jesus later.

Joel Kolb • Spring City Fellowship • Sermon • • 3 views
Joshua and the Israelites are dividing up the land. We will see the wisdom that God gave Joshua in dealing with attitudes toward receiving an inheritance. We also have a spiritual inheritance. When Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into heaven, he left behind a mission and a purpose to His followers. And we can apply these principles from Joshua to possessing our own spiritual inheritance
Christmas
Peter H. Davids • Peter H. Davids • Sermon • • 4 views
The passages give both sides of Christmas: that baby in the manger was very God upholding the universe by his word even in the manger, but he was also come to bring purification from sin and so be glorified through his cross and resurrection. He is king and priest, universal ruler and victim. St Francis who created the first creche embraced the cross and St Clare who saw the presence of Jesus and his power in the Eucharist realize that his self-offering was the power that ruled the world. Is this how it is with us?

By Pastor Glenn Pease Art Linkletter, some years back, told about the 4 year old son of a Florida woman who got up one morning dragging his leg. The mother could not find anything wrong with it. This went on for two days, but he did not complain of any pain. On the third day the worried mother took him…

By Pastor Glenn Pease When Irving Berlin visited London as a young man he gave the doorman at the station the largest tip of his life. He did it because when he held the door open for him he was whistling, "Alexander's Ragtime Band." That was Berlin's first big hit. That doorman was in the right place…

By Pastor Glenn Pease The Revolutionary War was complicated by the fact that it was often also a Civil War. Families were on both sides of the conflict. William, for example became the governor of New Jersey because of the influence of his famous father. The shocking thing was that William wanted to…
