The opening of Luke's Gospel records the reaction of two people to incredible news. Their reactions couldn't be more different: the one whose news is more positive doubts, yet the one whose news is more threatening rejoices. Unwrapping the Christmas Story.

Gabriel told Zechariah, "Your barren wife will have a son and you shall call his name John"-"God is gracious." Indeed, God was gracious to this couple who were way past childbearing age. What would John be like? Did he have a special mission from God? After all the Lord was about to perform a miracle, much like he did with Sarah and Abraham thousands of years earlier. What was so special about this kid? Come with the Grace United crew as we explore the marvelous story of Zechariah, Elizbeth, and John, so named because God is gracious.

God is the only faithful Person in the universe. He is The promise maker. He is The promise keeper. If he makes a promise, we can take it to the bank. And the greatest promise he has ever made to us, sinful humans is eternal salvation. Come with the Grace United crew as we marvel, awestruck at the majesty and glory of our Great Promise maker and Promise Keeper, who has given us the promise of eternal life in Christ.

God partners with His children, with those people who actively trust Him, working in the world in various ways. We have the privilege of asking God to work for those around us and of obeying Him in being the answer to many of those prayers. Jesus is LORD over all, even the demons must obey His commands and none are able to overcome His strength. We are always in an evil generation; we frequently demand signs of Jesus, trying to force Him to prove Himself. His death, burial, and resurrection give witness to His power and truth and provide for us hope that lasts beyond our present circumstances. Zechariah’s mouth was open, and he prophesied. In his announcement, he declared what God was doing through the messiah. We look at this to learn what Zechariah said, what the church learned, and what Advent calls us to consider.
