Don’t Be Fooled Colossians 2:16–19 (ESV) 16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism…

Jesus did not follow the Pharisaic fasting practices because they mourned the loss of the Temple and in him the New Temple, the Bridegroom, was here. He did did indicate that a new-age appropriate fasting would develop after his "removal." Thus there should be no wholesale dropping of tradition as has happened sometimes in the Church, but examination and discernment by competent authorities, not just to drop things, but to see if this or that pious practice no longer has the appropriate effect in this current age and culture of the Church AND if new practices would convey the same effect. Examples are given from penitential disciplines and choices that this priest has made.

Asceticism is not about giving up the goods God has put in the world, but about disciplining our passions so that we are not bound by our passions in this age but are free to already experience "putting on" our Lord Jesus Christ. Paul gives us the principles and Jesus gives us three examples of areas in which we can be free from bondage and directed to ultimate ends.

CODE WORD I want to talk this morning as we begin about something that we all experienced as children. It’s also something we’ve all learned to do with our kids or grandkids (if you have them). This is an expository sermon unpacking 1 Timothy 4:1–6. The central argument is that since apostasy and heresy characterise the later times, a crucial measure of a good church and a good pastor is that they be alert watchmen and pastoral theologians.
