The way of Jesus' Kingdom is the way of authentic love pursuing God's pleasure and God's will. We ought to be authentic in our lives seeking to please God rather than men. Doing good things to be seen by people will result in failing to receive reward in the Kingdom of Heaven. Whether giving to the poor, praying, or fasting, let it be done in secret with no show. Let us not seek to manipulate others with our public demonstrations of 'good will'. Frequently, we are guilty of using the poverty of others for our own benefit. This should not be so. LORD, help us to be of no reputation, to take on ourselves the form of a slave, a servant; to do what is right and good and true and just, when no one sees. It is a Secular heart. – Achan was proud & rebellious & not thinking of the Lord’s purpose and plan. He was doing God’s work (i.e. battling the enemies), while he was out of God’s will. Pride & rebellion are the hidden sins of Achan’s sin has made him and his family and everything he owns devoted to destruction; so he, his family, and his animals are all stoned to death, while his belongings are all burned. Thus the Lord’s order is finally obeyed, and he was no longer furious. The execution takes place in Trouble Valley (rsv “Valley of Achor”). The Hebrew noun aKor means “trouble.” Joshua’s words in verse 25 contain a play on words: Achan has brought … trouble (Hebrew verb aKar) on Israel, and now the Lord will … bring trouble on him. the church. It is a Secretive heart – David held a secret heart for a time and was also discovered and punished. So too, was Achan’s secret revealed. In v.23b they “laid it out before the Lord.” It is a Selfish heart – Achan is only thinking of himself. He does not consider the implications that his sin could bring upon his own family and friends – he only thinks of himself.
