What is the greatest of God's Commandments? Jesus identifies this One Great Command in Moses' Law and links a 2nd Command to it permanently. Love God with everything and Love your neighbor as yourself. Sometimes we, to our detriment, twist the 2nd command into a self-centered diatribe about learning to love ourselves rather than focusing on the point of the command, and of love in general, that we are to live sacrificially thinking of others as greater than ourselves. Indeed, the great Christian life is the life of a servant-hearted lover of others. Jesus teaches the scribes that the Hebrew Messiah, the Christ, was to be greater than King David, not simply one of his descendants. Jesus warns the people to beware of the scribes whose preference was their own honor. Finally, we are reminded that God doesn't need money. He already owns everything. The Lord has a LOT to say about love. But the love the Lord speaks of is far and away different than what the current cultural climate says about it. What does God consider love to be? How is it to be expressed among his people and especially to him by his people? Generosity. It's a good word. But it seems to have achieved buzzword status in the church--a word that currently means "financial resources", In that we need to give more to God. After all, we are the richest country in the world. Also, God told his people in the Old Testament to tithe. What is a Christian to do with all this? The Big "C" is a dreaded word in our world. "C" is painful. Surgery is almost always needed to cut the cancer out. But there is a big "C" in the Scripture as well. Circumcision. Circumcision is commanded for . . . all God's people. "But" we might say, "how can circumcision be commanded for all of God's people? Isn't it supposed to be for males only? Well, not exactly, although males in Israel are commanded to get the Big "C". What is God after? What exactly is circumcision for anyway?
