It is the two contrasts Paul writes of in Romans 7:6 – old as opposed to new, Spirit as opposed to letter, that help us understand that Paul is talking in terms of the new covenant, and the implications are astounding!

We now turn to the central point of Romans 7, the reason why we can't save ourselves, or make ourselves acceptable to God, is that we are in the flesh.

As we turn to consider the place of the law in the life of the believer, it is absolutely vital that we look at Romans 7 within its context of the larger argument that stretches from Romans 5 all the way through to the end of Romans 8.
