God’s Righteousness
September 25, 2022
What does righteousness mean?
Dictionary = to be virtuous, honorable or morally right.
In the Old Testament Hebrew: there’s a couple different words for righteousness:
Sad-diq (sa-deek) – just, innocent, in the right, devout, upright
S-da-qa (sdaka) – honesty, justice, justness
Se-deq (se-dek) – accuracy, what is correct, right thing, what is honest, equity, what is right
In the New Testament Greek: there’s one main word, dikaios, that forms the root for all the other forms of this word. Dikaios means righteous or just.
God is Righteous
Psalm 11:7
‘For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; His countenance beholds the upright.’
Psalm 9:4
‘For You have maintained my right and my cause; You sat on the throne judging in righteousness.’
Psalm 9:8
‘He shall judge the world in righteousness, and He shall administer judgment for the peoples in uprightness.’
Psalm 48:10
‘According to Your name, O God, so is Your praise to the ends of the earth; Your right hand is full of righteousness.’
His right hand is righteous which means when He exercises power and authority, He does it in a just and right way.
Psalm 89:14
‘Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; mercy and truth go before Your face.’
Psalm 97:6
‘The heavens declare His righteousness, and all the peoples see His glory.’

‘The Lord is righteous in all His ways, gracious in all His works.’
God is righteous.
God is just in all he does.
God is upright in all His ways.
God operates with honesty.
God always does the right thing.
Romans 3:10
‘As it is written: ‘There is none righteous, no, not one.’
Isaiah 64:6
‘But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; we all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.’
Romans 4:1-8
• Abraham’s works didn’t get him justified in the sight of God ~ that came by faith.
• He was justified 13 years before he performed the act of circumcision
• There’s no boasting before God. Verse 2 - reread
• Abraham simply, believed, and righteousness was credited to his account.
• If we try and work for salvation & righteousness ~ it will not be counted as grace to us – but as debt against us.
• God wants us to come to Him only through His Son, Jesus Christ.
• God also justifies the ungodly by faith.
• Blessed is the man when God’s perfect righteousness is ‘imputed’ to him.
• Blessed is the man whose sins are forgiven and not ‘imputed’ to him.
Righteousness has always come by God’s grace and received through man’s faith!
Through God’s grace and our faith:
• God sees us as righteous.
• On judgment day ~ we will be judged righteous.
