Emotions are both complicated and complex, both mysterious and mystifying. Even the experts are not sure what causes us to experience emotions. Both social science and neurobiology have tried, to no avail, to explain the origin of emotions. And for Christians, emotions can be troubling, frustrating, and untrustworthy. Some emotions seem deeply spiritual; other emotions seem downright sinful. God created us to experience emotions, yet there are still godly and ungodly ways to manage them. This 12-session course on the Book of Psalms will help you sort this out.

When dreams die...

You can get stuck, or you can get a check up from the neck up...

Thankful.

For what you have.

For what you had.

Even for what is to come.

1. O, give thanks to the Lord, for he is good...

Psalm 107:1 NRSV
O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever.
Psalm 107:2–3 NRSV
Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, those he redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.

2. When you lose your way (4-9).

Psalm 107:4–5 NRSV
Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to an inhabited town; hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them.
Psalm 107:6–7 NRSV
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress; he led them by a straight way, until they reached an inhabited town.
Psalm 107:8–9 NRSV
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind. For he satisfies the thirsty, and the hungry he fills with good things.

3. When you lose your freedom (10-16).

Psalm 107:10–11 NRSV
Some sat in darkness and in gloom, prisoners in misery and in irons, for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High.
Psalm 107:12–13 NRSV
Their hearts were bowed down with hard labor; they fell down, with no one to help. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress;
Psalm 107:14–15 NRSV
he brought them out of darkness and gloom, and broke their bonds asunder. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind.
Psalm 107:16 NRSV
For he shatters the doors of bronze, and cuts in two the bars of iron.

4. When you lose your health (17-22).

Psalm 107:17 NRSV
Some were sick through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities endured affliction;
Psalm 107:18–19 NRSV
they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress;
Psalm 107:20–21 NRSV
he sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from destruction. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind.
Psalm 107:22 NRSV
And let them offer thanksgiving sacrifices, and tell of his deeds with songs of joy.

5. When you lose your hope (23-32).

Psalm 107:23 NRSV
Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the mighty waters;
Psalm 107:24–25 NRSV
they saw the deeds of the Lord, his wondrous works in the deep. For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea.
Psalm 107:26–27 NRSV
They mounted up to heaven, they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their calamity; they reeled and staggered like drunkards, and were at their wits’ end.
Psalm 107:28–29 NRSV
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out from their distress; he made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed.
Psalm 107:30–31 NRSV
Then they were glad because they had quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wonderful works to humankind.
Psalm 107:32 NRSV
Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

6. When you lose your home (33-43).

Psalm 107:33 NRSV
He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground,
Psalm 107:34–35 NRSV
a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the wickedness of its inhabitants. He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water.
Psalm 107:36–37 NRSV
And there he lets the hungry live, and they establish a town to live in; they sow fields, and plant vineyards, and get a fruitful yield.
Psalm 107:38–39 NRSV
By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their cattle decrease. When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, trouble, and sorrow,
Psalm 107:40–41 NRSV
he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes; but he raises up the needy out of distress, and makes their families like flocks.
Psalm 107:42–43 NRSV
The upright see it and are glad; and all wickedness stops its mouth. Let those who are wise give heed to these things, and consider the steadfast love of the Lord.

Thankful, because what you have been given is far more than you deserve

Romans 5:8 NET 2nd ed.
But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
