Introduction - Review last week (verse 20 says: you have an anointing from the Holy One) and the anointing we received is the HOLY SPIRIT!
Spirit abides in us and we in Christ. Parable of the Vine!!
So we must abide in Christ Jesus. Those who are anointed by the Holy Spirit and dwell in Christ Jesus also have eternal life. So what does our passage for today say?
25 This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life.
26 These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you.
27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
28 Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming.
29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.
So the anointing of the Holy Spirit helps us abide in Christ Jesus?
He helps us abide in Christ Jesus because that is why He was sent from God to us. His name according to John even means Helper. So, does anyone know His name?
The name of the Holy Spirit is Paracletus or Paraclete - it means Advocate, Helper or Intercessor.
16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;
So why is the Holy Spirit a Helper? Well some of the things the Paraclete does are...
Teaching -
26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
This is why verse 27 tells us that His anointing teaches you about all things. 1 John 2:27
27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
Some of the things He does in teaching us: He -
a. Helps us understand the Scriptures.....
b. Helps us understand Spiritual things.....
c. Helps us pray when we don’t know what to pray....
Testifying - He testifies of the Father and Son..
26 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me,
Sometimes in our walk we will may feel like we are not abiding in Christ Jesus. In these times the Paraclete will helps feel His presence in our life. His Spirit will testify with our spirit that we are children of God.
Knowing that we have the Paraclete, the Helper abiding in us we should have confidence when coming before God with our prayers and petitions.
28 Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming.
Confidence - the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust.
If we have confidence we should be able to stand in the presence of the King when He comes. We should be able to avoid shrinking back. Because when He comes many will shrink back, many will try to hide themselves to avoid His presence.
There is no help in shrinking back especially if we are shrinking back in shame.
How many of you have shrunk back at some point in your life. You didn’t stand and face the music as it is said. That’s what Adam and Eve did in the beginning. They shrunk back, they hid themselves because they were full of fear and shame.
8 They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
Is this the way you want to be when Jesus returns? Do you want to shrink back in fear and shame. I don’t. I want the to be bold and know that with the Paraclete with me I am abiding in Christ Jesus and will stand in His presence with confidence.
The author of Hebrews reminds us that He knows us and since we are His children we have no reason to shrink back. We should draw near with confidence. Hebrews 4:16 says:
16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
We have no reason to fear, we have no reason to be ashamed. It was for these things that Christ Jesus died on the cross. His blood has removed all the reasons that would cause us to shrink back. When we accept Him as Lord and Savior we will be born of God - we become children of God.
As Children of God we have all the rights and benefits that go along with being a child of the King. But what does it take to become a child of God? John 1:12 says:
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,
So, having the Paraclete helping us and being bold in His presence are two advantages of being a child of God, but what else should we look forward to?
Well as a child of God we are Co-Heirs with Christ. Romans 8:17 says:
17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
But what does that mean? Well an:
Heir is - a person legally entitled to the property or rank of another on that person’s death.
So if we suffer with Christ we will also enjoy the glory that He enjoys. We will be with Him and see Him in glory. We get to be part of the Kingdom. The Kingdom of heaven. This is when we will be given a glorified body, we will be separated from sin, there will be no more tears, pain or disease. Best of all we receive the Promise that was given to all those who believe in Christ Jesus.
Just as 1 John 2:25 says:
25 This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life.
When we become children of God we receive the Promise.
But what is a promise? A promise is a declaration or assurance that one will do a particular thing or that a particular thing will happen.
How many of you have ever made a promise? Maybe a pinky promise when you were a child, or cross my heart and hope to die. Did you keep it or break it - every time? We can make promises but we can’t always keep them. We can’t control all of the things that are going on in our lives. The rains come, accidents happen and all sorts of unforeseen events can happen - for good or bad. But just because we can’t keep all of our promises doesn’t mean that He can’t keep the promise He made.
And what is the promise - Eternal Life!
But what is eternal life? - Generally it is thought of as unending life in heaven, which it is. However, it is more than that. Eternal life begins when we accept Jesus through faith.
Eternal life is beyond just Heaven. We should have a greater and more joyful life with Him than we would other wise have. Even when that life is full of grief and hardship. We also have the knowledge of the Father and the Son. Jesus said:
3 “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
So, eternal life isn’t all about living on after our body dies here. It is about the knowledge of God and our standing with Christ Jesus in the here and now. This knowledge of God gives us something else too. It gives us the assurance of Eternal life after we die and the Holy spirit is a down payment of that promise.
13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,
14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.
We are sealed in Him. The Holy Spirit is the promise and the proof that we are in Christ Jesus. He is proof that we abide in Christ Jesus because the Holy Spirit abides in us.
This is the Promise - Eternal Life. Who wouldn’t want eternal life? We have the assurance of eternal life in Christ Jesus. The assurance which comes through the presence of the Holy Spirit in our life because He seals us. The presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives comes through faith in Christ Jesus. And our faith in Christ Jesus allows us to abide in Christ.
In order to experience the power and joy provided by Christ Jesus we have to abide in Him. We need to remember that Jesus is the vine and we are branches that have been grafted into the family of God. He supplies us with everything we need, every Spiritual blessing, just as the branches of a grapevine are supplied by the vine which has it’s roots in the soil.
The power we receive comes from the Holy Spirit. He teaches us all things and leads us into all truth. His abiding in us allows us to abide in Christ Jesus. So be filled with the Holy Spirit and walk in step with Him. But all of this is only possible by believing in Christ Jesus through faith. So take that first big step - accept Jesus as Lord and Savior and you will receive the promise - the promise of eternal life.
