1 Timothy 1:1-11
1 Timothy 1:1-11
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope,
To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines,
nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith.
But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion,
wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.
But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully,
realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers
and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching,
according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.
First we can find it trustworthy that Apostle Paul wrote this letter to Timothy. 1st it bares his name and gives authority to his title. 2nd the 2 century churches and church leaders believed Paul was the author.
Paul wrote this to timothy around 62-65 ad. After Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome and after his release. And written before his final imprisonment that led to his death under Nero.
PURPOSE
Why did he, Why did Paul write this Letter to Timothy? I believe we will see that Paul wrote this letter to advise Timothy on how to deal with many issues arrising in the church of Ephesus. More importantly false teachers. Teachers teaching things contrary to sound doctrine. Teachers teaching things that are foriegn to biblical truth. Teachers teachings ideas that have led people away from the Gospel.
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope,
Who is Paul?
CHRIST JESUS OUR HOPE
Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is.
And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Who is Timothy? And What does he mean to Paul?
and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. And a disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek,
Paul wrote of Him - Phil 2:19-22
But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, so that I also may be encouraged when I learn of your condition.
For I have no one else of kindred spirit who will genuinely be concerned for your welfare.
For they all seek after their own interests, not those of Christ Jesus.
But you know of his proven worth, that he served with me in the furtherance of the gospel like a child serving his father.
For this reason I have sent to you Timothy, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, and he will remind you of my ways which are in Christ, just as I teach everywhere in every church.
A. Timothy was a faithful co-worker in the administration of furthering the Kingdom of God. He was encourage and mentored by Paul. He would join Paul on many occasions and was sent out to be Paul’s problem solvers to many a church. Understand the process that God has called us to. Is to multiply ourselves. To encourage and rear up those that mulitple the work of God. A new babe in Christ should be nurtured sent out to fulfill the kingdom purpose. Rinse and Repeat. We have this example within the family we raise children from dependency - always needing us for everything, into independence - being able to do things on their own and taking ownership, lastly moving them toward interdependence - learning how to work within the family to honor and glorify God. Then they leave and duplicates this with their own family. This is the dynamic that we see with Paul’s relationship with Timothy and many others.
B. Paul was proud with his child. He was proud because he has seen a babe in the faith grow in the knowledge and the application of that knowledge to honor himself and honor God ultimately.
--- Izzie Proud parent
Why send Timothy? I believe that Paul couldn’t be in two place or multiple places for that matter. And Paul new the Christ like Character of Timothy. He lived with him in the good and the bad, the missionary journeys, the good churches and the churches that needed work. He knew Timothy his spiritual son. If I were to ask about your children and their capabilities you would know or atleast you should. You would know what they where good at or no so good at. This is why Paul sends Timothy. He knows him, He knows his capacity. His capacity is not settle on himself but Christ.
!!!!!GRACE, MERCY, AND PEACE FROM GOD THE FATHER AND CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD.(1:2b) JOHN M
Timothy would need all three in dealing with the situation at Ephesus. Grace refers to God's undeserved favor, love, and forgiveness that frees sinners from the consequences of sin. Mercy frees us not from the consequences of sin, but from the misery that accompanies it. Peace is the result of grace and mercy. It refers not only to harmony with God but also to tranquility of soul. Grace, mercy, and peace are needed throughout the Christian life, not merely at salvation.!!!!!
As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines,
Importance of Him staying and not wanting him to shrink back from a monumental task.
Teaching strange doctrines - scripture
Now I urge you, brethren, keep your eye on those who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the teaching which you learned, and turn away from them.
For if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted, you bear this beautifully.
I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel;
What exactly are the doctrine and why are they strange?
How do we know what is strange?
How does Timothy know?
nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith.
What are these myths? Titus 1:14
not paying attention to Jewish myths and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.
For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.
What are genealogies Titus 3:9
But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless.
But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!
As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!
“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
V4 ALL the myriad religions of the world fall into one of two categories. There is the religion of divine accomplishment, that God in Christ accomplished salvation apart from human efforts. That is the Christian gospel. The other category is that of human achieve-ment, where men attempt to gain salvation by their own efforts in good deeds, ceremonies, or rituals. Every other religion to one extent or another fits into this category. The false teachers at Ephesus, like all other false teachers, offered a way to God which required human achievement.
But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
THE AIM OF OUR CHARGE - that is, the goal of apostolic instruction, is love a clear indication of the intended result of Paul's teaching in 1 Timothy. Whereas false teaching results in meaningless speculation, proper apostolic teaching results in practical good behavior rooted in love. And that love must come from internal, Spirit-worked changes that have produced a pure heart (rather than one filled with sinful desires), a good conscience (rather than one laden with guilt), and a sincere faith (rather than pretense and hypoc-risy). This verse is central for the whole letter.
“By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
REAL FAITH
For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.
Actionable - a Life seen a life watched. A life that is interacting with the good and the bad.
For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion,
wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.
But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully,
So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.
But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good.
realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers
and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching,
As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called Matthew, sitting in the tax collector’s booth; and He said to him, “Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him.
Then it happened that as Jesus was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were dining with Jesus and His disciples.
When the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, “Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?”
But when Jesus heard this, He said, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick.
“But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire compassion, and not sacrifice,’ for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
The Ten commandments are seen in Paul’s description here. And Potitenially specific actions that where happening in the church of ephesus. That Paul wanted to address.
And in doing so He shows them how to use the Law.
1st put us to the Savior because we can’t fixed a dead heart and to teach us how to honor and glorifiy God.
Not by using it to save one self. It was never meant to redeem people. It was never meant to make people right with God.
It is unlawful.
according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.
CONCLUSION
Decievers, Destracters, and Destroyers. We know that these false teachers exist and we must be ready. exspecially if we are the culprit.
Do not be carried away by varied and strange teachings; for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, through which those who were so occupied were not benefited.
JC RYLE writes
That old enemy of mankind, the devil, has no more subtle instrument for ruining souls, than that of spreading false doctrine. "A murderer and a liar from the beginning!" "Be careful! Watch out for attacks from the Devil, your great enemy. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for some victim to devour!"
Outside the Church, he is ever persuading men to maintain sinful lives, and destructive superstitions. Human sacrifice to idols, gross revolting, cruel, worship of disgusting and abominable false deities, persecution, slavery, cannibalism, child murder, devastating religious wars—all these are a part of Satan's handiwork, and the fruit of his suggestions! Like a pirate, his object is to "sink, burn, and destroy!"
Inside the Church he is ever laboring to sow heresies, to propagate errors, to foster departures from the faith. If he cannot prevent the waters flowing from the Fountain of Life, he tries hard to poison them. If he cannot destroy the remedy of the Gospel, he strives to adulterate and corrupt it. No wonder that he is called "Apollyon, the destroyer."
But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
Gospel centered faith that doesn’t distract us from it, nor destroys it with false teaching.
