Main Point: Jesus can help you in every moment.

Help you through the fear of death.

If the fear of death is destroyed, then what else is there to fear?

Help you in every temptation you face.

We can defeat temptation the same way Jesus did, by using His Word.

INTRODUCTION: I’m no good asking for help.....
Hebrews 2:14 ESV
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
since therefore - last week we talked about how we are family with Jesus.
children - we are his brother! HAHA - YOUTH, HALF MOM AND HALF DAD
share in flesh and blood. - We share flesh with Jesus, because he became a man just like us.
he himself - middle, reflective.
partook the same things - he ate together - (illustration?)
through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil - defeating death is not living forever, It is not a fountain of youth (tom brady?).
it is dying then coming back to life. Jesus could not defeat death until he died.
1 cor? death where is your sting??
devil? - accuser of the brethren.
We chase after sin so much, without realizing that it is the very thing that brings us death.
Hebrews 2:15 ESV
15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery -
Deliver - to set free.
We can quit being scared of death.
health food crave? freezing yourself?
The fear of death is lifelong slavery - Strong words.
Hebrews 2:16 ESV
16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.
Surly - of course. Why? of course? becaues Angels can’t die! So why would he be helping them.
angels that he helps - Jesus did not come to earth and die for angels. literally to take a hold of....which I like Jesus grabbing a hold of you to help you.
he helps - Jesus is here for you. He doesn’t hate yo, he is here for you.
offspring of Abraham - who was he talking to? Hebrews. He always has a special relationship with Jews, even now.
Hebrews 2:17 ESV
17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
Therefore - if you see a lot of therefore it means the author is making an argument.
he had - imperfect tense. He kept having to learn over and over again. haha stub his toe, hammer his finger, cut off in traffic by a mule! haha
every respect - Jesus laughed and cried and felt sick, etc…He was like us in every way.
so that- purpose clause.
Become - Greek for genesis. Being born.
In Greek thought, there were more than one types of knowledge. There was a head knowledge, but then there was a experience knowledge. Heart or gut.
Jesus had to become like us to become merciful.
ILLUSTRATION - South st. Pete Publix. statistics vs reality. - I stop short, but Jesus came all the way.
Merciful - not giving us what we deserve
faithful - or trustworthy. Have you ever been offered help by someone who you did not trust? Teeneager - got offered a ride by a guy.
high priest - Exodus, The high priest would take our sins to God. Jesus wore those sins. STOP AND EXPLAIN.
Propitiation - payment, atonement.
Illustration - making a payment????? Medical bills???
Hebrews 2:18 ESV
18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
One of the most encouraging verses in the NT.
he himself - reflexive, intensify it. He really did this!
We are tempted to eat an extra brownie . Think of Jesus’s temptation!
has suffered when tempted - perfect tense.
is able - present tense.
SO HOW DOES JESUS DO THIS? WHAT PRACTICAL STEPS ARE THERE?
These folks were facing persecution. Even death. Jesus has defeated the death.
Jesus is better than temptation. If we look to him, how did he fight temptation? With scripture.
CONCLUSION: are you being tempted. Even to walk away. Jesus isn’t disgusted by that. He is here to help. He knows.
