Introduction
The life of the prophet could be a lonely one.
In Jeremiah 15:17, Jeremiah says…
Things get even lonelier for Jeremiah in chapter 16.
He is forbidden to marry, not allowed to be involved in the usual community expressions of sorrow (funerals) and the usual community expressions of joy (weddings and welcoming children into the world).
All of it is apart of showing Judah how YHWH stands apart from his people.
Chapter 16 starts bleak, but it does have hope for its middle and end.
Let’s take a look…
Major Ideas
#1: The Elimination of Joy (vv.
1-9)
#2: For What Reason? (vv.
10-13)
#3: Joy restored (vv.
14-15)
#4: Fishin’ and Huntin’ (vv.
16-18)
#5: The Nations Will Come (vv.
19-21)
Conclusion
How does Jeremiah 16 point us to Christ?
In this chapter salvation doesn’t happen apart from judgment.
In order of Judah to return to the Promised Land, it has to be first exiled from the Promised Land.
That’s the judgment, but salvation comes when their sins have been judged and paid for (cf.
vv.
14-15, 17-18).
Like Judah’s sins, our sins deserve judgment.
Like Judah’s salvation, our salvation only comes when the price for sin has been paid for.
The judgment we deserved was poured out on Christ who paid the full price for our sins on the cross.
