SLIDE 1 “WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY”
SLIDE 2
Hebrews 13:1 (NASB95)
1 Let love of the brethren continue.
SLIDE 3
love (Greek / philadelphia) - brotherly love, kindness or affection
SLIDE 4
continue (Greek / meno) - remain, abide, not to perish, endure, survive
SLIDE 5
Hebrews 13:2 (NASB95)
2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.
SLIDE 6
hospitality (Greek / philonexia) - love or care for strangers
SLIDE 7
entertained (Greek / xenizo) - receive as a guest or lodge
SLIDE 8
Hebrews 13:3 (NASB95)
3 Remember the prisoners, as though in prison with them, and those who are ill-treated, since you yourselves also are in the body.
SLIDE 9
Hebrews 13:4 (NASB95)
4 Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.
SLIDE 10
undefiled (Greek / amiantos) - pure, untainted, free from that which is by nature
SLIDE 11
judge (Greek / krino) - to be of opinion, decide, evaluate, correct
Why is marriage so dear to God?
Marriage here is the word wedding, thought was neat
Where should Christian love be practiced first?
A dedicated Christian home is the nearest thing to heaven on earth and it starts with a Christian marriage.
Let’s check out verses 5-6 now.....another kind of love mentioned
SLIDE 12
Hebrews 13:5–6 (NASB95)
5 Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,”
6 so that we confidently say,
“The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid.
What will man do to me?”
This is a very detailed pin point verse isn’t it?
Look at character and love of money? What is the Lord telling us here?
How many times do you tend to be concerned in this area of money or just have to remind yourself the Lord is in control?
Take a look at the definition for “love” in this verse
What do you think the antidote for loving money would be? contentment and trust in God
SLIDE 13
13:5 love (Greek / alphilargyros) - not covetous, without covetousness
Do you think we consider our luxuries here as necessities?
It has been said by Christians in more needy countries that “Christians in America need more prayer than we do, it harder to be a Christian when you are comfortable”
Can contentment ever come from material things? From where does contentment come?
SLIDE 14
“Contented Christians are people with priorities,
material things are not high on their priority list”
The next verse for tonight definitely been big for me in my walk
SLIDE 15
Hebrews 13:7 (NASB95)
7 Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith.
There is that word remember again
This is a great example of the church and how it disciples
The word led here is also rule in other translations so could have meant pastors or elders
How did they rule or lead? Believers who do not feed on the Word will feed on what?
The author was probably also meaning those who had been martyred for their faith and not to forget them and their examples as well
Always wonderful to see in so many areas of ministry in the church those speaking into each other, those conducting themselves with Godly character before others and finally showing a walk or example of faith for others.
Do we realize how many in the church body and outside the church are watching us?
Remember was used in verse 3 about those imprisoned. So in both verses the examples of one believer can change an outcome of another’s life.
SLIDE 16
Hebrews 13:8–9 (NASB95)
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
9 Do not be carried away by varied and strange teachings; for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, through which those who were so occupied were not benefited.
I first just want to ask everyone to chime in on what you interpret in these two verses
SLIDE 17
same (Greek / autos) - identical to something
Build your life on Christ, He never changes!
Ephesians 4:11-14 really shows how this is meant to work in the church and if the church is preaching and teaching truth we should really have no excuse for getting carried away by strange doctrines…amen?
SLIDE 18
Ephesians 4:11–12 (NASB95)
11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,
12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
SLIDE 19
Ephesians 4:13–14 (NASB95)
13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.
14 As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;
Look at our Hebrews verse again
SLIDE 20
Hebrews 13:9 (NASB95)
9 Do not be carried away by varied and strange teachings; for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, through which those who were so occupied were not benefited.
What are we to be strengthened by and not by?
What does that look like to you or how do we walk that out according to this verse?
Why would the writer be telling the Hebrew believers this? they were wavering in their faith and wanted to go back to dietary laws , these laws only impressed to be spiritual but did not make them spiritual
Remember this Greek definition for grace
SLIDE 21
grace (Greek / charis) - of the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues
SLIDE 22
grace - God taking what was unforgivable and making it forgivable through Jesus His Son (David Small)
