The Father or Your Father?
(Galatians 1:11-17)
Introduction: 1. Illustration: If your friends jump off a bridge are you going to as well?
2. Often times people jump into faith just because that is what someone wants them to do.
3. What is our motivation for being Christians?

Body: I. What are the reasons behind our faith?

A. Other people can be an influence on our belief. (2 Tim. 1:5)
B. However, each of us is responsible for making sure that we are believing the truth. (Jn. 14:6)
C. The Pharisees had faith in the traditions because that was what they learned from their fathers, but it was breaking the will of God. (Mt. 15:1-6)
D. Paul was also zealous in the traditions until he learned the truth and took responsibility to change when presented with the truth. (Gal. 1:13-16)

II. What are the reasons behind our worship?

A. Other people can be an influence on our worship. (1 Cor. 15:33)
B. However, each of us is responsible for being sure we are worshiping in the proper way with the proper attitude. (Mt. 6:5-6; Jn. 4:21-24)
C. The Pharisees were worshiping God in vain by holding to their traditions instead of seeking to follow God’s will. (Mt. 15:6-9)
D. Paul was zealous in the way the Pharisees were zealous but when he learned the truth, he abandoned worshiping like them (Gal. 1:11-16)

III. What are the reasons behind our obedience?

A. Other people can be an influence on our obedience to the gospel. (1 Tim. 4:1-3)
B. However, we must train ourselves to be obedient to what is set before us in scripture. (2 Tim. 3:16-17; 1 Tim. 4:6-8)
C. The Pharisees were obedient to their traditions rather than the will of God. (Mt. 15:1-9)
D. Paul had been just like them until he came to know the truth and became obedient to it. (Acts 9:17-19)
Conclusion: 1. Are we here this morning because it’s a habit we were taught to do?
2. Do we have “faith” because that’s what everyone says we must have?
3. Are we being obedient to the gospel because the preacher or someone else
said we must.
4. Or are we genuinely seeking after God, and upon learning of him having
an obedient faith toward him? (Heb. 11:6)
