Communion Talk
Muhammad Ali once said that he “floated like a buterfly and stung like a bee” but he revealed his true heart by announcing all the time that “I am the greatest” which was a full of arrogance and Pride! He represents us all before conversion. But the one whom was and is the Greatest Jesus Christ, what did he say that revealed his heart. We might say about his heart, or we would think he would describe his heart this way “Joyful and Generous”, “Powerful and all Knowing”, perhaps “exalted and dignified”. These are all true of course, but, Jesus speaking about himself and his own heart proclaims this;
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Jesus only really talks about his own heart clearly once and it is found in this passage
Gentle and Humble is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. The one whom is the most powerful
Love and compassion clothed in skin
The heart is not how we know the heart, like for example a heart reflects emotional subjectiveness. However, the biblcical understanding of heart is the centre of who we are (the core). The heart directs and defines a person. Solomon speaks about guarding the heart proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
His heart, firstly is ‘Gentle’ are we known or describe ourselves as having a ‘gentle’ heart? Gentle translated here in the greek is only mentioned 3 times, firstlys as ‘meek’ we said a while ago that ‘meek’ meant not weak, but of having a sword to use, but choosing to keep it sheathed. we also here that the ‘meek’ or ‘gentle’ of heart will inherit life, becasue our hearts are replaced with the heart of Jesus.
Secondly, he calls his heart ‘lowly’ this overlaps ‘gentle’ revealing a humble and contrite heart, meaning that he is accessible to all people, especially the broken and people with no status. Pause for a moment, everybody has access to the King of King and Lord of Lords, no matter who they are or what they have done. He is the one who gives us rest, and takes our heavy yoke like helium does to a balloon.
Obviously, the biggest and most heaviest of yokes, the one that was killing us, is and was sin. By his sacrifice upon the cross we have been released and freed from the burden of sin and in its place is this yoke of kindness, forgiveness and love. these are the same attributes we are to share with our brothers and sisters in Christ and how we are to treat people still burdend by sin. Now this Yoke that Christ gives, does not mean we will be free of pain, stress or hardship but it means we will like a life preserver in the ocean we will remain bouyant and will survive the stromy seas becasue of him.
This is what we are rememebring Jesus for today around the table!
