Romans 3:19-31
I have recently gotten contacts, and started growing a beard.
My wife is afraid that I’m going through a mid-life crisis.
Maybe I am.
We sing the song, “The things I used to do I don’t do them any more.”
If you are saved I hope that can be said about you today!
Last Sunday, we saw in verses 9-20 that man is totally depraved.
There is absolutely no good in him at all!
Everything we touch is tarnished by sin.
We talked about taking a good look at ourselves!
Paul is continuing his line of thinking, but shifts directions.
Now shift our attention to the New man - the saved man.
I want to see tonight three key ideas about this new man:
I.
He Was a Ruined Man
vs. 19-20
19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
A. Called a Sinner
v. 19
19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
The law exposed the man for what he was, and called him what he was…a sinner!
“All the world may become guilty before God.”
No one can truly read the Bible and walk away and see themselves as anything but a sinner before God.
But praise the Lord for mercy!
So yes we are Called what we are - a sinner… and we see in verse 20 that we are then...
B. Condemned as a Sinner
v. 20
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
God gave the Law as a tool to show us how we need a Savior.
It was given to drive men to Jesus.
The Law was given to show man that he was guilty in the eyes of God and needed a Savior!
The Law is like a mirror -
It shows how dirty your face it, but it cannot clean you.
The mirror points to your need
The Law cannot clean you up, but it can create a hunger in us for the One Who can clean us up!
The Lord Jesus Christ
So we see that this new man was a Ruined Man, called a sinner, and condemned.
But now
II.
He Is a Redeemed Man
v. 21-26
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
One of the most beautiful words in the Bible is seen in verse 21… “But”!
It shows a change of thought
I was a ruined man, but there was a change that has taken place.
These next few verses are full of theological truth.
Theologian Donald Gray Barnhouse called them, “The heart of the Bible.”
I cannot do them justice in just a few moments, but we do want to see a few truths from them tonight.
Notice the traits of the new man:
The Redeemed Man:
A. Has Experienced Faith
vs. 21-23
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
We have seen we are sinners
We are lost and cannot get to God.
Man cannot work his way to God.
Man cannot be good enough to please God.
Yet, God demands perfect righteousness to enter heaven.
verse 23 says that we have all come short!
This literally means we have missed the mark
This word is used in archery - if you have missed the target, you have come short!
So by faith, those who believe and put their trust in Christ as savior God makes them righteous.
This is not by works, it is only through faith in Christ!
Christ’s righteousness, the righteousness of God is placed unto all and upon all them that believe!
This is salvation!
The Redeemed Man has” Experienced Faith and...
B. Has Experienced Freedom
v. 24
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
This verse gives us two wonderful words - “justify” and “redemption.”
The word justify means “To declare one not guilty, or to bring out the righteousness in.”
It means that God in His power and in His grace declares us to be righteous and worthy of a relationship with Him.
the word redemption means “to let go after a ransom has been paid.”
When we received Jesus as our Savior, God applied the price that Jesus had paid on the cross to our account and declared us righteous.
He freed us from the condemnation and the consequences of our sins.
He set us free!
I am free from the need to try to please God.
He is already pleased with me because of what Jesus did on the cross.
I don’t have to be good enough for God to love me, he loved me even while I was yet a sinner!
He has given me His righteousness and in His eyes I am positionally holy as He Himself is Holy!
This has happened “freely” verse 24 tells us!
the word literally means without a cause.
Even though we didn’t deserve it
Even though we couldn’t earn it
Even though we could never be good enough
Even though we could never pay Him back!
Even though our sin hurt him
He freely - without Cause - justified us and redeemed us!
I don’t understand how God could do this for us, but I am glad that I can experience it!
I don't understand how electrons are created by a turbine and flow through wires until they make a light glow, but I don't sit in the dark because I don't understand.
I can't figure out how a black cow eats green grass and gives white milk, but I don't do without dairy products.
Even though my knowledge of God's methods and gifts is incomplete, I still enjoy the benefits of those things nevertheless!
