-So today we’re going to be starting a new series
-and in a way we’re going to be starting two different series’s
-but also in a way we’re going to be doing one big series
-here’s what I mean by that
-Starting at Christmas we are going to start reading the book of Exodus
-And from Christmas until Easter we are going to be reading through Exodus
-And starting today we’re going to spend a little bit of time over the next few weeks in the book of Genesis
-and so, disreagarding the weeks when I go to drill if you add that up, we’re gonna be spending the next 26 weeks in just the first two books of the bible
-And that is a long time to spend reading just the Old Testament
-And I don’t want that to scare you
-See what I’ve noticed in the church is that we typically spend the vast majority of our time reading this section of the bible
-and we devote very little of our time in the Old testament
-And that kind of makes sense when you think about it
-we are followers of Christ
-We are believers in Jesus
-so it would make sense that we spend the majority of our time reading the parts of the bible that Actually talk about Jesus
-But there are a couple of reasons I want to spend the next half of a year in the old testament
-the first is this
2 tim 3 16
-couple of things I want to take note of in that verse
-and first and foremost is the word “God-Breathed”
-theopneustos is the word in the greek
-and that word was actually invented by Paul
-we have record of that word ever existing in all of greek literature until paul wrote it
-the only time we ever see this word in all of greek literature is either Paul writing or other people who are quoting this verse
-and because we never see this word used anywhere else
-we can understand what it means in a couple of different ways
-The first being that scripture is in fact breathed out by God
-We can know that it is useful because we know that it comes From God
-It’s not just Paul’s words on the page, it’s God’s words
-The second way we can understand it
-is that the word of God is like receiving breath from God
-it’s life giving just like the air we breathe is life giving
-And if you ask me which of those two meanings is it, I’ll give you an emphatic yes.
Both
-Scripture is both breathed out from god
-and it is the source of life from God
-the second thing I want to point out is the use of the word “All”
-remember that when Paul wrote this letter to timothy, the word “Scripture” meant what we now call the “old testament”
-Because the miraculous thing about the bible is that the bible wasn’t written all at once in one sitting
-What we now have in this book was written
-and by written I mean the acutal human beings who were inspired by God and took an actual pen to an actual paper
written
-by over 40 different people
-over the course of 1500 years
-in three different languages
-by doctors, shepherds, kings, fishermen, judges, and soldiers
-all pointing to one central idea
-and all of together is god’s word
-not just this part up here
-But here’s the second reason I want to spend all this time in the Old Testament
Luke 24:13-26
Likewise in John 1 we see philip saying this
And in the book of Matthew you can’t go two pages without reading something along the lines of
“This was done to fulfill what was written”
-every time you turn around something Jesus says or does is fulfilling the old testament scriptures
-see when the early church read the old testament
-they saw the fingerprints of Jesus on every page
-every story they read, every person in the old testament, every event
-they looked at that and they saw Jesus
-and yet sometimes when we read the old testament we put a block up in our minds
-we spend all of our time thinking about the actual event and we miss the fingerprints of Jesus that are all over the thing
-So what we’re going to be doing for the next 26 weeks is reading through a small portion of Genesis and then the entire book of Exodus
-and we are going to be focusing in on the fingerprints of Jesus
-For some of you this might be a new way of looking at the bible
-and I’ll be completely up front with you, there will be times in which you think to yourself,
-no, I don’t see the connection
-you’re gonna say “no I don’t think that passage has anything to do with Jesus”
-I’m pretty sure that one’s just about Moses
-And that’s ok
-My goal here is not to convince you of the proper way to read scripture
-and my goal is not to “convince” you to see Jesus in the scriptures exactly the way I see Him
-In fact we might read a passage of Scripture and I don’t even notice the fingerprints and you do
-And if that happens, please come find me after the sermon and point it out to me
-But the main goal of all of this, of all of the next 26 weeks
-is for us to train ourselves to read the scriptures spiritually
-to train ourselves to look for Jesus in the Old testament
-so as we go through the next several months I invite you to read the old testament the same way Jesus read it.
-the same way Peter read it
-the same way paul read it
-And I give you permission as we go along to shake your head
-and say no, that one doesn’t make sense to me
-I don’t see jesus in that specific verse
-That’s ok
-Because at the end of the day the original reading of the text is the plainest and safest way to read it
-when the bible says there was a boat and a flood, that means there was a boat and a flood
-but my hope is that through practice you can start to see Jesus in the old testament more and more,
-and you’ll really start to see that the whole thing is ultimately pointing to him
-So with that I’d love if you would turn to page one of your bibles.
very first page very first verse
Genesis 1:1-8
-Now normally I would talk about verse one first, but I want you to just hold that in your brain for a minute, and we’ll come back to it
-the older translations use the word “firmament”
-which is basically like a big dome
-and we obviously know there’s not a physical dome above us
-we’ve sent rocket-ships up there
-We kind of understand that at least today there’s not a big dome up there.
-But think for a minute about the spiritual picture this paints for us
-We have this idea that there is a distinct seperation between heaven and earth
