Introduction

Torah Portion
This Torah Portion goes from Deuteronomy 29:10-30:20
In our previous Torah portion we talked about Re’eh (beholding: a blessing, and a curse)
We talked about having two choices related to obedience / disobedience = blessing / cursing
Obedience to blessing
We talked about judging
John took us through the Torah portion Tika Vo - when you enter - did a good job explaining the blessing and cursing and how the Lord can heal
Prior to that Torah portion I spoke about what it means to stand against God
We taught on the Steps of a Hebrew Covenant:
10 STEPS TO THE HEBREW BLOOD COVENANT – An ancient Hebrew Ritual
1
Take off Coat or Robe
After removing coat, give to partner
Giving all of yourself to partner
2
Take off belt
Belt held weapons showing strength – give to partner
To defend, protect, and fight for each other
3
Cut the covenants
An animal is cut down middle. Standing between the halves, back to back, each partner walks through pieces making an 8 figure, coming back to middle facing each other and say an oath
Giving up rights to self to walk with partner until death. Give oath facing partner
4
Raise the Right Arm and Mix with Blood
Raise right arms and cut palms and bring together
Blood is mixing with partner’s blood to become one
5
Exchange Names
As blood is intermingling, names were exchanged
Take each other’s last name to become part of their own name
6
Make a Scar
Rub blood together and make a scar
Scar was seal of permanent testimony to the blood covenant
7
Give Covenant Terms
Standing before witnesses give the terms of covenant
Share all that you own with each other
8
Eat memorial Meal
Take a loaf of bread and feed to each other and share cup of wine
Wine represents blood and bread represents body. Sharing bread and wine together as being One is a new nature
9
Plant a Memorial
Plant a tree
This will be a testimony of the blood covenant between each other
10
First Born
Give first born to die for the other partner to test commitment
I am committed in this covenant until next generation – first fruit
In today’s Torah portion we will continue to develop the idea of this covenant of God
What it means to stand in front of God instead of against God - as we discussed last week
We will talk about the concept of the “Renewal of the Covenant”
We will talk about 7 characteristics of God’s covenant with us.
We will uncover the mystery of that covenant with Israel and its meaning both the Biblical perspective and the Jewish perspective

Presentation

How many of you know that God knows everything
Deuteronomy 29:10 NKJV
“All of you stand today before the Lord your God: your leaders and your tribes and your elders and your officers, all the men of Israel,
Moses is on the last day of his life
Gathers all Jewish people - the lowest to high ranking - old and young - men and women
Initiates them into the covenant of God
Introduces a new concept - responsibility (for one another) - not just the leaders
Officers - scribes
Every person responsible / obligated to help others observe TORAH - restrain transgressing, keeping it, following
Responsible for your circle of influence
In order to bring unity
To enter covenant together
Not to be apathetic to one another
Despite their sins/ flaws/ Israel, in process, continues to STAND before the Lord as He entered the covenant with Israel
Point One
1- Israel must stand before God
Deuteronomy 29:10–12 NKJV
“All of you stand today before the Lord your God: your leaders and your tribes and your elders and your officers, all the men of Israel, your little ones and your wives—also the stranger who is in your camp, from the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water— that you may enter into covenant with the Lord your God, and into His oath, which the Lord your God makes with you today,
This is the Renewal of the covenant
Standing before God emphasized people are renewing the purpose of the covenant: to bind them to God’s Torah
Ramban Sforno - standing before the Ark of God who cannot be deceived
But they would not/ could not be bound by the Torah - wilderness experience. And God knew this
Deuteronomy 29:29 NKJV
“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
Two ways to interpret this verse:
First - God knows the future (revealed to us in prophecy - we will come back to this in our next Torah portion, next week) and we only know the present that which we can see (has been revealed to us) - including the sins in our community
Second: that God knows our sins (even secret sins)
And consequently He knew the secret sins of Israel and the he (Israel) would not be able to keep the covenant
Point Two
2- The Covenant is with Israel united/ established
Deuteronomy 29:10–11 (NKJV)
“All of you stand today before the Lord your God: your leaders and your tribes and your elders and your officers, all the men of Israel,
your little ones and your wives—also the stranger who is in your camp, from the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water—
Your little ones
As minors cannot accept covenant
Able to have conscience of responsibility
But they are there to share in the privilege of being part
Ramban - God wanted to indicate that the elders were responsible to assure that the children would be raised in the Torah -
Accept responsibility for the children even before building a synagogue
Take a community to raise a righteous man
Deuteronomy 29:12–13 (NKJV)
that you may enter into covenant with the Lord your God, and into His oath, which the Lord your God makes with you today,
that He may establish you today as a people for Himself, and that He may be God to you, just as He has spoken to you, and just as He has sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
The same covenant God made to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob made to all Israel
Again the promise to establish Israel as a people to God Himself
Covenant with Israel
Marriage covenant - where the bridegroom says I am going to marry you- regardless (Hosea)
Consider the same verse in Young’s Literal Translation:
Deuteronomy 29:12 (YLT)
for thy passing over into the covenant of Jehovah thy God, and into His oath which Jehovah thy God is making with thee to-day;
Original Verse
that you enter/passing over
Original Language Picture
לצבון
Rashi:
It would not , however, be correct to explain it as… “to make you pass” (when the suffix would be objective), but it must be explained like (Deu 4:14) “that you may do it”
Deuteronomy 4:14 (NKJV)
And the Lord commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that you might observe them in the land which you cross over to possess.
Rashi goes on to explain that the “passing” was: those who made the covenant used to make a partition a pass through it like in Jer 34:18
Jeremiah 34:18–20 NKJV
And I will give the men who have transgressed My covenant, who have not performed the words of the covenant which they made before Me, when they cut the calf in two and passed between the parts of it— the princes of Judah, the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, the priests, and all the people of the land who passed between the parts of the calf— I will give them into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their life. Their dead bodies shall be for meat for the birds of the heaven and the beasts of the earth.
The context is because you do not keep my covenant
However the first letter of “passing” is very important
Lamed = ל
the 12th letter of the Hebrew alphabet
the tallest letter
only letter that rises above the baseline
consider the center letter or HEART of the Hebrew alphabet
Means to prick, sting, entice, goad - as a shepherd might prod /prad/ cattle to perform some action
The ancient pictograph: staff - authority
He is the authority of the covenant
He made Abraham also pass it over / Hebrew
Point Three
3- The Covenant with Israel and other nations
Deuteronomy 29:14 NKJV
“I make this covenant and this oath, not with you alone,

10
First Born
Give first born to die for the other partner to test commitment
I am committed in this covenant until next generation – first fruit
Jeremiah 31:31–33 NKJV
“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
Hebrews 8 NKJV
Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man. For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices. Therefore it is necessary that this One also have something to offer. For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. Because finding fault with them, He says: “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
1 Peter 4:17 NKJV
For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?
The covenant is made to Israel
The Lord opens it to others: There is two other groups:
The ones who came out of Egypt with them who were already grafted in:
Exodus 12:37–38 NKJV
Then the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides children. A mixed multitude went up with them also, and flocks and herds—a great deal of livestock.
And to the nations they encountered in their journey
Deuteronomy 29:12–14 NKJV
that you may enter into covenant with the Lord your God, and into His oath, which the Lord your God makes with you today, that He may establish you today as a people for Himself, and that He may be God to you, just as He has spoken to you, and just as He has sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. “I make this covenant and this oath, not with you alone,
Ruth-
Naomi loses her husband and her sons and is left alone with her daughters in law- among who Ruth a moabite was:
Ruth chooses to be grafted into Israel:
Ruth 1:15–17 NKJV
And she said, “Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law.” But Ruth said: “Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, And there will I be buried. The Lord do so to me, and more also, If anything but death parts you and me.”
Again what are the steps in the covenant?:

10
First Born
Give first born to die for the other partner to test commitment
I am committed in this covenant until next generation – first fruit
Consider Yeshua in the Garden praying before He is given as the Son of the Covenant in the last step of the Hebrew Blood Covenant:
John 17:6–19 NKJV
“I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they have known that all things which You have given Me are from You. For I have given to them the words which You have given Me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from You; and they have believed that You sent Me. “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them. Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I come to You, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.
This is Jesus praying for His Jewish disciples and anybody that already lives under the common wealth of Israel
Consider again
John 17:20–26 NKJV
“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me. “Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me. And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”
Jesus prays not only for His Jewish disciples, but also for the future disciples of the world
It sounds to me like the same covenant
Point 4
4- Warning against Idolatry
Deuteronomy 29:14–19 (NKJV)
“I make this covenant and this oath, not with you alone,
but with him who stands here with us today before the Lord our God, as well as with him who is not here with us today
(for you know that we dwelt in the land of Egypt and that we came through the nations which you passed by,
and you saw their abominations and their idols which were among them—wood and stone and silver and gold);
so that there may not be among you man or woman or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the Lord our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations, and that there may not be among you a root bearing bitterness or wormwood;
and so it may not happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, ‘I shall have peace, even though I follow the dictates of my heart’—as though the drunkard could be included with the sober.
God foreknew that the issue is in the heart
God foreknew Israel would not be able to keep His covenant
Neither would the Gentiles
So He made provisions for His covenant to be available to all who repent and who wish to follow Him
However, the issue is in our heart
Psalm 4:4 NKJV
Be angry, and do not sin. Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still. Selah
Psalm 81:12 NKJV
So I gave them over to their own stubborn heart, To walk in their own counsels.
Deuteronomy 29:20–24 (NKJV)
“The Lord would not spare him; for then the anger of the Lord and His jealousy would burn against that man, and every curse that is written in this book would settle on him, and the Lord would blot out his name from under heaven.
And the Lord would separate him from all the tribes of Israel for adversity, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this Book of the Law,
so that the coming generation of your children who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land, would say, when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses which the Lord has laid on it:
‘The whole land is brimstone, salt, and burning; it is not sown, nor does it bear, nor does any grass grow there, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in His anger and His wrath.’
All nations would say, ‘Why has the Lord done so to this land? What does the heat of this great anger mean?’
This is a warning against idolatry
Idolatry is to want to have the same rights as the bride without the covenant
Who is that man/ that him/ that man that the lord will not spare
The one who does not keep the commandment
But just like is Sodom and Gomorah the Lord sent angels to rescue Lot, He will not let His people die without rescuing them
God is not done with Israel/ or us
God allowed the tribes to be scattered in 722 BC by Assirya
In 588 BC the temple is destroyed, Judah is conquered by Babylonia, and most Jews are in exile
332 conquered by Alexander the Great - Hellenistic rule starts
Deuteronomy 29:25–27 NKJV
Then people would say: ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt; for they went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods that they did not know and that He had not given to them. Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against this land, to bring on it every curse that is written in this book.
Deuteronomy 29:28 (NKJV)
And the Lord uprooted them from their land in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.’
this word cast is the word SHALAK in HB. It also means to throw - cast them out - shalakem
But at the center of the word we have Lamed again
Lamed = ל
This verse is connected with the next verse that we had already introduced at the beginning of our Torah portion - shepherd / staff
Consider
Deuteronomy 29:28–29 NKJV
And the Lord uprooted them from their land in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.’ “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
the word children looks like this in the original language - with stars or more properly oddities
His authority is hidden in the secret promise contained in His covenant
But the children of Israel are children of covenant for ever,
See it in the original scriptures
Verses 28 and 29 enhanced
the Lamed is bigger in this verse than any other verse in the Bible
The starts or oddities
So far we have discussed 4 points in our message today
1- Israel must stand before God
2- The Covenant is with Israel united/ established
3- The Covenant with Israel and other nations
4- Warning against Idolatry
Point 5
5- Promise of Returning / repentance
Deuteronomy 30:1–5 (NKJV)
“Now it shall come to pass, when all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse which I have set before you, and you call them to mind among all the nations where the Lord your God drives you,
and you return to the Lord your God and obey His voice, according to all that I command you today, you and your children, with all your heart and with all your soul,
that the Lord your God will bring you back from captivity, and have compassion on you, and gather you again from all the nations where the Lord your God has scattered you.
If any of you are driven out to the farthest parts under heaven, from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there He will bring you.
Then the Lord your God will bring you to the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it. He will prosper you and multiply you more than your fathers.
Just like a shepherd He is going to bring them back
The children of Israel will repent - Teshuvah
He Himself is returning
Teshuvah
There is guarantee there will be Renewal and Repentace
Two things need to happen for the Lord to return:
For the Jew
a- Gathering Israel from the Nations
b- the Rebuilding of the Temple
For the Gentile:
a- He came as the Prophet (as Moses) as the suffering servant of Isa 53, and
b-He will return as the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords
By faith we: Gentiles and Jews believe He is Messiah
Today we have Christian who have the testimony of Yeshua but do not keep the commandments
We have Jews who keep the commandments but do not have the Testimony of Yeshua
We also have everything in between
We need to be brought to a point where both happen.
1948-Exodus is happening every since
But Messiah comes a greater Exodus will take place
Deuteronomy 30:6–8 NKJV
And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live. “Also the Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies and on those who hate you, who persecuted you. And you will again obey the voice of the Lord and do all His commandments which I command you today.
He will fulfill the promise in Jer 31:31-33
Jeremiah 31:31–33 NKJV
“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
He will do it as promised in Heb 8:10-12
Hebrews 8:10–12 NKJV
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
He will put the desire to obey the law in every Israelite who is of promise
Romans 9:1–8 NKJV
I tell the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and continual grief in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh, who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises; of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen. But it is not that the word of God has taken no effect. For they are not all Israel who are of Israel, nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, “In Isaac your seed shall be called.” That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed.
Romans 11:25–32 NKJV
For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: “The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob; For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins.” Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. For as you were once disobedient to God, yet have now obtained mercy through their disobedience, even so these also have now been disobedient, that through the mercy shown you they also may obtain mercy. For God has committed them all to disobedience, that He might have mercy on all.
He will put the enemies of Israel to shame
Point 6
6- Blessing of Torah Living
Deuteronomy 30:9–10 NKJV
The Lord your God will make you abound in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your land for good. For the Lord will again rejoice over you for good as He rejoiced over your fathers, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this Book of the Law, and if you turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
This is the only way we can make our brothers the Jews jelous
How do you know if you do wrong = Torah
School Master verse. Gal 3:22-25
Point 7
Practicality of Torah Living by Choice
Deuteronomy 30:11–20 NKJV
“For this commandment which I command you today is not too mysterious for you, nor is it far off. It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend into heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it. “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess. But if your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them, I announce to you today that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to go in and possess. I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”
He has presented and fulfilled His part of the Covenant:
He would like us to keep our part by choice
don’t try to do it yourself (ascending to heaven), you will fail
But He has given us His Seed first in the Torah and in the person of Messiah
We need to make the choice and He will bless us
And the same Gospel given to Abraham will be fulfilled in us

10 STEPS TO THE HEBREW BLOOD COVENANT – An ancient Hebrew Ritual
1
Take off Coat or Robe
