Those entrusted with the responsibility of preaching are to discharge it faithfully, boldly and persistently in the power of the Holy Spirit. The Christian community should honour faithful preachers and challenge those who fail to honour their responsibility.

The responsibilities of preachers

They must be diligent in their preaching

2 Timothy 2:15 NIV84
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

They must be faithful in their preaching

They must be persistent in their preaching

2 Timothy 4:1–5 NIV84
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.
See also Ac 18:4–6; Ac 20:31; 1 Th 2:1–2

They must be bold in their preaching

Acts 28:31 NIV84
Boldly and without hindrance he preached the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ.

Acts 14:21–22 NIV84
They preached the good news in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” they said.

They must be filled with the Holy Spirit

They must be compassionate in their preaching

When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.

The responsibilities of the church towards preachers

Faithful preachers should be honoured

1 Timothy 5:17 NIV84
The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.
See also Mt 13:53–57; Lk 10:3–8; Heb 13:7

Unfaithful preachers are to be exposed and will be judged

Galatians 1:6–9 NIV84
I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!
