we got a lot to look at!
and we will look at the first 26 verses that have to with the Samaritan Woman.
and lets pray
“God we come before you, thank you for your loving us and leading us. You are the living water, you are why we can worship anywhere, anytime! God let us drink and praise you today! You are Strength, and why I am here today. I ask that you would use me to teach your Word, and that you would use your Word to convict, exhort, and instruct us.” You are
Okay since were just jumping to John 4
We should establish a context, and an outline:

Context

You should know that in the first 6 chapters of the book of John
Jesus is going to 5 different groups of people
His disciples in (Ch. 1-2:12)
The Jews in (Ch. 2:13-3:36)
The Samaritans (Ch. 4)
The Jewish leaders (Ch. 5)
The multitudes (Ch. 6)
The next 6 chapters is major section break where Jesus deals with the oppositions the Jewish Leader had with Jesus
the final chapters (13-21)
shows the effects of Jesus ministry with the unbelief of the Jews, and the faith of the disciples as a result of Jesus’ Victory over our own sin.
Today we are going to focus in on Jesus reaching the Samaritans
in Chapter 4
in 3 sections
Here is our Outline:

OUTINE

Jesus Travels (John 4:1-6)
Jesus Teaches About the Living Water (John 4:7-20)
Jesus Teaches About Worship (John 4:21-26)

Jesus Travels (John 4:1-6)

just so you know in this section were going to gain a lot of information and context that will help us fully appreciate the other 2 sections
John 4:1–6 NKJV
1 Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John 2 (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples), 3 He left Judea and departed again to Galilee. 4 But He needed to go through Samaria. 5 So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

Jesus Travels (John 4:1-6)

There is 2 reasons as to why Jesus left Judea to go to Galilee
Because He knew that the Pharisees knew He baptized more than John.
Note this Jesus didnt leave because He was afraid
In the next chapter Jesus returns to Jerusalem and they will want to kill him
Jesus may have just knew He needed to create some distance
before He really shocks them.
Jesus really left because as we see in verse 4 of Chapter 4 that Jesus NEEDED to go to Samaria
The greek word for needed “ἔδει” means to be unavoidably determined”
another word it can be translated to is contingent
Jesus is unavoidably determined to reach this Samaritan Woman
So he travels from Judea to Samaria
but did you noticed how the Bible narrowed in his exact location.
Kinda like a God’s eye view seeing it all but then focusing on a specific location
first from Judea to Galilee, then on his way there to Samaria, then in Samaria a town called Sychar, to a plot of ground, and in that plot of ground a well, Jacobs well.
The town Sychar is also called Shechem in the OT & had several Biblical events take place
its is where the rape of Dinah (Gen 34),
the covenant renewal (Josh 24),
and the burial of Joseph (Josh 24:32).
Shechem also is the place from which Abimelech reigns (Judg 9),
and it is the site of Rehoboam’s coronation (1 Kgs 12:1).
Shechem is refortified by Jeroboam, who then lives there (1 Kgs 12:25).
Show Map of Holy Land: 1st century
is 44 Miles and would take just over an hour to drive
however it is hill country so walking it will take 12 minutes to walk
thats for today, using modern roads, there may have been a better path, and Jesus may have have used a camel or some animal to travel which would cut that time in half.
so we can understand why in verse 6 it says that Jesus was weary
6th hour is noon
In the noon time in Biblical days
it was a time to rest & eat. They worked much in the morning and evening but the afternoon was given to reenergize.
in verse 31 the disciples found food and urge Jesus to eat.
and while we the humanity of Jesus being weary and hungry.
we also see in Jesus’ response to His disciples that He prioritizes the Kingdom of God over His own flesh by saying His food is doing God’s will
The last thing I would like to point out before we get to enjoy the next amazing section
is that during this time of Jesus the Jews and the Samaritans just had a war.
talk about who Samaritans are....

Jesus Teaches About the Living Water (John 4:7-20)

John 4:7–20 NKJV
7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?” 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” 15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.” 19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”
Understand the woman
& remember Jesus isnt just sitting next to her but..... Jesus is unavoidably determined to reach this Samaritan Woman
Understand the Living Water

Jesus Teaches About Worship (John 4:21-26)

John 4:21–26 NKJV
21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”
Like us, Jesus is about to excite her life with some major changes.
What exciting times we both are in right now!
We both know that in some way changes are around the corner.
and change can cause doubts, and difficulties
but I want you to know
our God is unchanging
He is the same yesterday, today , and forever.
He is always good
He is always faithful
He is always on time
He has always been, and always will be
He is always with you
He always wins
He always loves you
& He is always our Savior
Lets not get too caught up in what we dont know
But rejoice in what we do know
Knowing that our amazing Lord
is gunna do His work,
and lead his people that seek Him!
So lets seek Him together.
2.. Shechem was destroyed by the Assyrians in 722BC with all the rest of the 10 tribes of Israel
3. Josephus (ancient historian) says the Samarins show up in the are of Shechem in the time of Nehemiah and that Alexander the Great supported building a Temple at mount Gerizim
4.. Samaritans means “keepers of the law”
they believed that they are where God wants them because it is where Abraham went after receiving the promise.
And since it was the first place Israel went after entering the promised land to shout blessing and curses.
So they believe that Israel was wrong to go to Jerusalem, that the original promised site is where they are.
So they become they’re own religious group of Israel (not Jews) Because jews is short for Judah which they are against.
So they thought they can worship God for those reasons,
5. Jews hated them, and just before Jesus came in in 107Bc Jewish forces destroyed the holy site of Sameria at Mt. Gerizim.
So there is this flippen war before Jesus from Samaritans and Jews on where the right place to worship God is,
Maybe you have only given worship at a building
Maybe worship
We dont have time to continue but he will continue his teaching and seeing the response
He is hungry but He tells him that His food is to do Gods will.
(When I am hungry I often oput Goss will aside)
and that the disciples will get to benefit in reaping what Jesus sowed.
Pray:
maybe your like the Samaritan woman and Jesus is wanting to give you living water or eternal life but you got hidden sin in the background, you have some husbands or wives at home. Jesus knows about them. or maybe your worship of the Lord has been
