The Gospel so Far
The Gospel so Far
They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.
the key human condition - we serve the created not the creator
we serve ourselves
Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
we deserve death for our rejection of God
we approve of evil
NO EXCUSE
You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.
there is a danger in judging others
we do what we judge others for
in chapter 3 Paul tells us that all have sinned
there is no excuse in judging others, so don’t do it
we need to take responsibility for our own actions
stay out of other peoples’business
the legalistic, the Pharisee in each one of us is just yearning to get out
Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?
NO ESCAPE
god is truth and his actions are in truth
us humans do not have the totality of truth
so why do we judge
Hillsong / Bethel / modern music is ungodly, unscriptural, wrong
yet where is truth in all this
are hymns more godly and thus should only be sung
getting offended with people could be considered a form of judgement
Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?
GOD’S KINDNESS
god is kind, forbearing and patient
God’s kindness should lead to repentance
NOTE on JUDGEMENT
when we judge we are showing contempt for Jesus
it is our tendency to judge out of our human nature
God judges out of his righteous nature
the opposite is usually true for when we judge, we try to get someone to conform to our thinking
we are actually walking contrary to God
do we want to be on the wrong side of God?
But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. God “will repay each person according to what they have done.”
EACH PERSON
God’s righteous judgement will be revealed
this judgement is based solely on the righteousness of God
it will be for all persons - none will avoid it
the warning is particular for those who are stubborn and unrepentant
repentance is the key for us making right
To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.
PROMISE OF GOOD
here is a divine truth
eternal life is granted for doing good
the good is seeking glory, honour and immortality
all these are defined by Jesus Christ
remember it has to be via the grace of Jesus
But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.
PROMISE OF EVIL
those who are self-seeking
wrath and anger follows evil
direct comparison fro the previous verse
Paul is stating the opposites in stark relief
let us choose to go good in following Jesus
