Greatness defined
Read Mark 10:32-45
Mark 10:32–45 ESV
32 And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33 saying, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise.” 35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Follow Me

Ream Mark 10:32
Mark 10:32 ESV
32 And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him,
This has been the theme of Chapter 10 so far
If you are going to follow me you must sacrifice to do the will of God
This was the cruxed of the teaching on divorice
its not as easy as you think it will be
you cant just walk away from this
You cant just walk away from following me
If you are going to follow me Come as child
with nothing to offer
needing everything from him
empty handed
If you are going to follow me give up everything
you will need to leave the thing you love most to follow me
you must give up every earthly thing that gives you status to enter the kingdom
Now look at the way mark sets this up
Jesus is walking ahead of them
He is leading the way to Jerusalem
to his death
he is out front
as a king should be the first to ride into the battle
The disciples are amazed
Amazed almost dumbfounded
how in the world is it that those who seem most blessed by God wont enter the kingdom
We have given up everything and we wont be glorified for it??
Those who followed were afraind
we have chosen to follow this man
but this doent seem like it will end well for us
He takes the twelve and for the third and final time makes clear to them what is to happen to him
Mark 10:33–34 ESV
33 saying, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise.”
This journey we are taking is a one way trip
we will not be comeing back this way together
you all must understand this
you are right this will not end well for me
but listen and dont loose heart after three day I will rise
The disciples get lost before the end
They begin to think about themselves

Glorify us

Mark 10:35–37 ESV
35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.”
The common answer to Jesus for telling his death
but what about us
Mark 8:32 ESV
And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
Mark 9:30–35 ESV
They went on from there and passed through Galilee. And he did not want anyone to know, for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise.” But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him. And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?” But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”
Jesus explains what will happen
that he will suffer
And the disciples do what they loose perspective
they think about themselves
Jesus you dont have to die
you are supposed to be the king
who is the greatest among us
can we sit at your right hand and left hand
The suffering servant explains what he will do while leading them and they immediately think about themselves
lest we think we are better than them
how often do we fall into the trap
if I do this thing then god will bless me
we pray for help on a test and hope that is good enough
we read our bibles so god wil do …. Whatever for us
we know what his has done and we immediately think of what do we get from this
the right reaction is to follow him

Follow me

Mark 10:38–40 ESV
38 Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
You have got it wrong you don’t understand what you are asking
follow me
drimk the cup that I drink
be baptized with my baptism
the baptism of a servant who can in and covered himself in the filth of the world i. Order to over come it
this is a challenge to them and they accept
but notice this doesn’t get them what they ask for
jesus responds great you will get what you have agreed to but it is up to god and his will the outcome
we don’t follow the suffering servant to be glorified but because of what he has done for us
what he will do
we don’t take on the mantle of the cup and the baptism because we know we will be glorified but because has lead us to that.

Dont be like them be like me

Mark 10:41–45 ESV
41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
to Drive it home
dont do it like the gentiles
like the ones outside the faith.
let me flip the script
be like me
this is a similar response to mark 9

Them

Mark 10:41–42 ESV
41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42 And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.

Me

Mark 10:43–45 ESV
43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Why did Christ Come

HE CAME TO BE FOLLOWED IN LIFE AND DEATH
So that we would know how to leave
as an example to for us to follow
and to give his life as a ransom for many
Romans 5:18 ESV
18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.
