Atonement:
Atonement:
Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD. And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God.
The Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur).
This week on Tuesday at sundown, is the jewish holiday called Yom Kippur which is called ‘The Day of Atonement” in the Bible.
It is a day set aside in which the Israelites observed to atone for their sins.
It is this day, in which the high priest was permitted to enter the Holiest of All to atone for the sins of the people.
The LORD spoke to Moses and told Moses to tell the people to humble theirselves.
We see herein lies the difference between this holy-day verses the others. This day was a day in which they did not celebrate. It was a day in which they were to humble themselves, it was a day in which they were to fast, and pray to the LORD and seek forgiveness of the LORD.
They were not to treat this as any other day, they were not to celebrate and to have a good time, because sin is a serious business. When a person commits sin, it is a serious matter, it is serious because the scripture says:
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
Any time the Israelites messed up, God’s wrath was kindled against them. They sinned, God sent a plague, they sinned, God sent fire amongst them and destroyed them, they sinned, the earth swallowed them up, they sinned. They sinned and the heavens were shut, no rain, no harvest, pestilence, and diseases.
Sin is a serious matter. It can cut your relationship off with God, it can cause God’s wrath to be revealed against you from heaven.
Therefore, on this day, the Israelites were reminded of the seriousness of this occasion. Their sins needed to be atoned for, if not, then it would kindle the wrath of God against them, if sin was not dealt with, they had no fellowship with God.
To deal with their sins, the High Priest had to deal with his own sins. He had to bring a young bull for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering. He had to bathe himself and put on the priestly garments, then he had to take two male goats for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering.
He took the bull and sacrificed it for a sin offering for himself to PURIFY himself and his family, making them right with the LORD.
Then afterwards, he took two male goats and presented them at the entrance of the Tabernacle before the LORD. The high priest was to cast lots to determine which goat was reserved as an offering to the LORD and which goat would carry away the sins of the people into the wilderness.
I don’t have time to get all of the details, but I want to focus on the important aspects.
After the goats were selected, the High Priest would slaughter the first goat, and carry its blood into the Holiest of All, and sprinkle the blood on the mercy seat, he did this to purify the entire Tabernacle because of the sin and rebellion of the people.
Then, after he came to the altar and sprinkled the blood on the altar in the courtyard, he presented the live goat, laid his hands on the goat and sent it into the wilderness, symbolizing the carrying away of the sins of the people.
There was blood everywhere, blood on the altar, blood in the holy place, blood on the floor in the holiest of all, blood on the mercy seat, blood on the ground outside.
This happened year after year, atonement had to be made for the sins of the people. Atonement was made, but the sin was still there, atonement was made but it wasn’t a remedy for sin.
But then the Lord Jesus Christ showed up, some hundred years latter. And the word of God says in Hebrews 10:5-9
Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.
Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
The bull, the ram, the two male goats all pointed to what Jesus would do.
When the priests sacrificed these animals, there was blood all over the camp, blood was everywhere, blood on their clothes, blood on the instruments they used, blood on the altar, blood in the courtyard, blood in the Holy Place, blood in the Holiest of All.
AND WHEN THE ARRESTED JESUS......his blood got all over the place. The punched him, blood came out, the place a crown of thorns on his head, blood trickled down, they flogged him and every time they swung, the blood flowed from his back, it got on the floor, it got on the whip, they nailed his hands to the cross, the more blood flowed out, they nailed his feet to the cross more blood flowed out.
BLOOD EVERYWHERE!!! But all of that blood that flowed, it was so that your sins could be forgiven, all of that blood that came out of Jesus it was for you to be sanctified, you ought to lift your hands and tell the LORD thank you!!!
Hebrews 10:10 says “we have been sanctified through the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
No more sacrifices, Jesus made a way for us, Jesus made a way for us, Jesus made a way for us!!! Jesus shed his blood to sanctify us, Jesus shed his blood to pay for your sins, Jesus shed his blood for you to be free, Jesus shed his blood to save you from wrath, Jesus shed his blood heal you, Jesus shed his blood to deliver you.
AND WE’VE COME OUT TONIGHT TO CELEBRATE IT, WE’VE COME OUT TONIGHT TO HONOR THE LORD, WE’VE COME OUT TONIGHT TO GIVE GOD GLORY, WE’VE COME OUT TONIGHT TO COMMEMORATE WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE FOR US.
RIGHT NOW, LIFT YOUR HANDS AND WORSHIP HIM, RIGHT NOW LIFT YOUR HANDS AND TELL THE LORD THANK YOU FOR DYING FOR ME, THANK YOU FOR FORGIVING ME, THANK YOU FOR LIBERATING ME, THANK YOU FOR SANCTIFYING ME!!!
Tuesday night begins the day of atonement for the Jews. But herein lies the problem, how can your sins be forgiven if you don’t have a sacrifice?
Some think that if they pray, recite some scriptures, fast, and don’t do no work for the rest of the day they are alright.
BUT WITHOUT THE SHEDDING OF BLOOD.....THERE IS NO REMISSION OF SIN!!!
Your sins need to be forgiven, mankind as a whole is sinful, whether you are a Jew or Gentile, you are sinful:
David said:
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
SIN HAS TO BE DEALT WITH!!!! The only remedy for sin is to believe in Jesus!!! We have to accept the free gift of salvation that comes through putting your faith in Jesus Christ!
