Context

We have already laid the majority of context for this book, but I want to take a moment and bring in just a few details.
We already know that Paul is writing this letter to Timothy to provide instructions concerning his ministry. He provides great insight into things that are necessary for ministry, as well as things that are to be avoided, at all costs, within ministry.
In the immediate context of this passage, we read instruction about discipleship.
2 Timothy 2:1–2 ESV
1 You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
Paul is giving Timothy instructions concerning how he is to teach and train his fellow brothers in arms. Paul stresses a few key details concerning their training that I think will be most beneficial for us this morning.
2 Timothy 2:19–20 ESV
19 But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.” 20 Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable.
There is a difference between the foundation of God and the great house.
The Foundation is, and always will be, standing firm.
It has two seals on it that are eternal and unchanging.
The Lord knows who are is (Numbers 16)
Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.
Within the representation of the Church, there are some who are vessels unto honor and those who are vessels of dishonor.

The Word of God is a Saving Matter

God may grant them repentance.
This stems from a knowledge of the truth.
They may come to their senses.
This would result in escaping the snare of the devil,
They are captured by him and blindly doing his will.

Commitment

2 Timothy 2:21 ESV
21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.
If anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable:
He will become a vessel for honorable use.
He will be set apart as holy.
He will become useful to the master of the house.
He will be ready for every good work.
