Introduction

When we speak of soul-winning, we are actually speaking of soul-leading. We seek to lead people to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. As we do, we are praying that they will put their faith in Him, trusting solely in His shed blood for the remission of their sins. It is the responsibility of every child of God to be a witness for Him. That command, not a suggestion, is given repeatedly throughout the New Testament, Here are just a few verses.
Matthew 28:19–20 KJV 1900
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Mark 16:15 KJV 1900
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Acts 1:8 KJV 1900
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Note that the word “ye” is used in all these verses. The term “ye” in our King James Bible is the plural form of the word “you.” (This shows the care and accuracy of preservation in our Bible that other translations remove.) Jesus spoke to a collective group of believers, telling them and us that it is our responsibility to witness. Every child of God should have a burning desire to share the wonderful truth of God’s love, mercy, and grace to condemned sinners. When that desire exists, there is no need to coerce, persuade, or prod a believer to win souls.
In our Soul-Winner’s Club training, we will examine three areas that will teach the primary practice of soul-winning. We will assist you with answering questions that may be asked and help you dispel the false doctrines that you will encounter. This guide is not all there is to know about being an effective witness for Christ. However, it is a valuable learning resource to help you get comfortable sharing the Gospel. Soul-winning is a challenge. It is also very rewarding. Always remember that God entrusted us with sowing the seed of His Word. He tasked us with bearing fruit.
Psalm 126:5–6 KJV 1900
5 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. 6 He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.
Soul-winning is NOT about how much fruit you see, but how much seed you have sown.

Understanding the Gospel

Before we dive into how to present the Gospel, it is crucial that we first understand what the Gospel is and what it is not. Many believers genuinely believe in reaching others with the Gospel; however, their understanding and presentation are different than Scripture. Thus, their efforts often accomplish little or no eternal value.
The word “gospel” literally means “good news.” The Bible defines precisely what “good news” the Gospel entails.
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” (1 Corinthians 15:1–4)
The Gospel is the good news that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day. It is important to note that there are four different aspects of this good news.
Christ died
for our sins
was buried
rose again the third day
If any of these aspects is removed from the message, it no longer represents the Biblical message of salvation. Thus, learning to give a clear and compelling Gospel is vitally important. As we work through this beautiful subject of soul-winning, ask the Holy Spirit to teach and guide you in His wisdom and truth. Then, as you witness for Him, ask Him to supply His words and thoughts as you give the Gospel. Being a witness for Christ is something that is of God and not of ourselves. The Holy Spirit convicts of sin, righteousness, and judgment. It is, then, His conviction power that leads to conversion. We, as soul-winners, must rely on the Holy Spirit, not our experience or proficiency.

Creating Your Own Personal Testimony

An effective and easy way to present the Gospel is through personal testimony. Being a “witness” means you have personally experienced God’s saving grace. Thus, you must be prepared to give your testimony to others.
1 Peter 3:15 KJV 1900
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
Paul is a great example of how effective your testimony can be as you give it to others. The entire story of Paul’s personal testimony before King Agrippa is found in Acts 26. As you read it, you will note three elements of his testimony that are important to consider when preparing our own.

Life Before Conversion

Acts 26:4–11 KJV 1900
4 My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews; 5 Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee. 6 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers: 7 Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope’s sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews. 8 Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead? 9 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10 Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them. 11 And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.
Paul spoke about how religious he was before knowing Christ and how it opposed Christ.

Conversion

Acts 26:12–18 KJV 1900
12 Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests, 13 At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me. 14 And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 15 And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. 16 But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee; 17 Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, 18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
Paul spoke of how he recognized his need for Christ and his commitment to Christ.

Life After Conversion

Acts 26:19–23 KJV 1900
19 Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision: 20 But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance. 21 For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me. 22 Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: 23 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.
Paul testified how his life changed after committing to Christ and how he was now a witness for Christ.
Now, no one ever has the same testimony. Paul’s life and conversion was indeed different. However, all believers can follow the same general outline: Life Before Conversion, Conversion, Life After Conversion.
For you to firmly implant this testimony outline firmly in your mind, you should develop a “ten second” testimony that forms the basis for a more complete testimony.
Here is an example.
(Life Before Conversion) There was a time in my life when I was hopeless and confused; (Conversion) then I understood all Christ did for me changing my life. (Life After Conversion) Ever since then, I have had a satisfying purpose for living.
Here is another example.
(Life Before Conversion) I always thought I wasn’t that bad and would go to heaven no matter what. (Conversion) However, I realized God had a different plan to which I responded. (After Conversion) I know no I’ll go to heaven.
Now develop your own testimony using these three elements.
Life Before Conversion: Try to use descriptive words that a non-believer will understand which would characterize your life prior to knowing Christ (examples: selfish, no meaning, guilty, troubled, without hope, full of worry/anxiety, always trying to be good, etc.)
Conversion: Then describe your conversion (salvation) in terms that non-believe will readily understand. Phrases such as “got saved” or “had my sins covered by the blood” or “knelt at Calvary,” while meaningful to believers, will probably not be understood by a non-believer. You might describe your conversion experience with phrases such as: “I discovered God loved me” or “I realized Jesus was God’s Son” or “Someone told me that God had a plan for my life.”
Life After Conversion: Use words familiar to a non-believer to describe your life now (examples: I stopped worrying. I found peace. My guilt is gone. I have found the only way to real living).
Remember to keep your “ten second” testimony simple without going into detail.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

Develop a ten-second testimony and have it prepared to share with the class next week.
Develop in week two a thirty-second testimony and have it prepared to share with the class.
Develop in week three a sixty-second testimony and have it prepared to share with the class.
Later we will expand your ten-second testimony into a thirty-second and sixty-second testimony. Here is an example of how to do that.

Ten-Second Testimony

(Before) “There was a time in my life when I had no lasting peace and joy, but someone told me that was because I didn’t have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
(Conversion) “After my relationship with God was established,
(After) I discovered the reality of true peace and joy.”

Expanded to a Thirty-Second Testimony

(Before) “When I was younger, I couldn’t find lasting peace and joy in anything or anyone. My friends and activities could not fill that emptiness in my life.”
(Conversion) “One day, a friend of mine told me how Jesus had died so that my life could have meaning and direction. I then realized that I was a sinner in need of God’s forgiveness. So I asked God to forgive me, and genuinely believed in Jesus as my Savior, receiving Him into my life.”
(After) “Since turning my life over to Jesus, I have discovered that the Bible provides all the answers I need. No matter what comes along, God’s peace and joy are mine forever.”

Expanded to a Sixty-Second Testimony

(Before) “When I was younger, I couldn’t find lasting peace or joy in anything or anyone. Even though my friends and I always were on the move, it seemed there should be more to life than what I was experiencing. My friends agreed with that.”
(Conversion) “One day, a friend and I were talking about some problems I was having; and he explained that my biggest problem was not having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He showed me that on one was perfect, which means all have sinned, as the Bible says in Romans 3:23. And, I learned that the Bible, in Romans 6:23, says my sins had earned a definite wage for me, which was death. However, God didn’t leave me in that position. Jesus died for me so my sins could be forgiven, and I could enjoy a relationship with God and receive His gift of eternal life.”
“All I had to do was to believe genuinely that Jesus died to pay the penalty for my sins and that He rose from the dead so I could have a new life. My next step of commitment was to ask Him to forgive me of my sins. My prayer was simple; I said, ‘God, please forgive me fore my sins. Thank you for sending your son, Jesus Christ, to die for me and to live so I could have eternal life. Please save me from my sins, and take control of my life, Lord Jesus.’”
(After) “Since turning my life over to Jesus, God’s lasting peace and joy have been mine as I have obeyed God’s Word to overcome problems. I don’t mean that I don’t have trials, but I am now confident that God will help, guide, and strengthen me when problems come. Have you ever considered the difference that Jesus Christ could make in your life?”

How to Present the Gospel

We are now going to look at the key points of the gospel and their corresponding verses in Scripture. Each of these we will use to help an unbeliever understand their need for the Savior.
Throughout this entire process, the key to our strategy is “Bridge Building.” We are building a bridge that will help them see their sinful condition, it’s penalty, Christ’s payment, and lead them to accept Him as Savior.
We will also see 4 Golden Rules that must be utilized as you present the Gospel message. Here is the first Golden Rule.
GOLDEN RULE #1 - BE FRIENDLY!
Remember that anytime you are about to share the gospel with someone they are often seeking answers to some of life’s toughest problems. Yes, you may feel intimidated they have come to you for those answers, but remember that the Holy Spirit is on your side. So relax, be friendly, and let the Holy Spirit work through you. Your focus with anyone and any conversation is the gospel message. So, alway keep in mind, that you must bring all POLITE CONVERSATION to a point of SERIOUS SPIRITUAL intent. If you are the one initiating the conversation, it might be good to get the ball rolling by asking the following questions.
Do you have any king of spiritual beliefs?
Who is Jesus to you?
Do you think there is a heaven and a hell?
If you died today, where would you go?
Asking such questions not only help to move the conversation to the gospel, but will also provide valuable information about preconceived ideas.
Here is a good transitional question that you can ask.
If what you believe were not true, would you want to know it? If they answer YES, then you can proceed to the next step. However, if they answer NO, then STOP and DO NOT SAY ANOTHER WORD! By doing so, you will often evoke the following response. They will often say, “Well, are you not going to tell me?” To which you can then respond with a warm smile as you say, “Yes, thanks for asking!”
Unfortunately, too many times people respond to your original question with a firm NO. If that happens, then you remember to always leave them in such a way that they will come to you later if they have questions. Never be ugly or unkind. Instead, thank them for the opportunity of conversing with them and assure them that if they every want to know more that you are there for them.
Now, here are few suggestions to bear in mind as you move to presenting the core of the gospel message.
Be Mindful of the transitions between points.
Move Quickly and do not ask them if they have any questions.
Stay On Track no matter what.
This bring us to our second Golden Rule.
GOLDEN RULE #2 - STAY ON TRACK!
When it comes to giving the gospel, all kinds of distractions will occur. From cellphones ringing to unrelated questions, you must always be prepared to stay on track. The most common distraction is unrelated questions. For example, someone might ask, “Was Abraham really 99 years old before he had his first child?” This question might be about Scripture, but it has nothing to do with the gospel message. Never answer a question that is unrelated to explaining the gospel.
Here are two suggestions on how to handle unrelated questions.
Complement them on their question and ask their permission to set it aside.
Promise them by saying, “Let me finish what I am doing and it will help you understand the answer to that question.
1 Corinthians 2:14 KJV 1900
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
Resume explaining the gospel.
Being a successful soul winner means utilizing Golden Rule effectively and often.
One last thing before we move to the gospel message itself. There are transition sentence that you can learn and use as you move from point to point. The first of these is this.
TRANSITION SENTENCE #1 - “There are four simple things every persons needs to understand.”
This transition sentence moves you from casual conversation to serious spiritual intent. It is from here, that we get into the meat of the gospel message.

POINT #1 - They must understand they are a SINNER. | Teach him/her that he/she is a SINNER

KEY VERSES:
Romans 3:10 KJV 1900
10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
Romans 3:23 KJV 1900
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Scripture is quite clear that all men are sinners. This is something that many people are confused about. The key to both verses are the “none” and “all.” There is “none” righteous. No single person can do any amount of good and expect to gain heaven. The word “all” means “everyone.”
I will often ask people that very question. What does the word “all” mean? It is rare that anyone will answer differently than using something like “everyone.” At which point, it is good to state and ask the following.
“How could God say over 2,000 years ago I would be a sinner if I was not even born yet? I did not even exist and had not sinned once. Yet, God states that I would be a sinner.”
This is a very important point. It helps us to IDENTIFY the correct understanding of sin. What is sin?
Sin is anything that is disobeys God and His Word. In God’s eye, there is no difference between little or big sins. To disobey God is to sin. In explaining this point, I often will ask a second question.
“How many lies does it take to be a liar?”
Again, the answer is generally that it only takes one lie to be a liar.
Thus, I explain that Adam was a sinner and everyone is born of Adam. Everyone has his “likeness and image (sin nature).” We are all Adam’s descendants and, consequently, are born with his sin nature.
Romans 5:12 KJV 1900
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
From there I use animals as an illustration of nature.
“If a dog were to walk in here and speak to us, how would it speak?” (Answer: It would bark. It is not a cat that meows or a cow that moos. It is a dog and dogs bark for it is their nature to do so. They were born that way.)
By the same token, an apple tree produces apples, not oranges. Why? It is an apple tree. In that same vein, people who are sinners reproduce people who are sinners. Adam’s sin made is so sin passed upon all men, thus, all are born sinners.
Here is another illustration that I often use for this point especially for parents who have kids.
“As a parent, did you spend any time teaching your kids to lie or to cheat on a test? (Answer: Obviously no parent spends time teaching such things to their kids. Instead, most parents spend more time teaching them not to lie or cheat. Why? They already have a nature to sin and do wrong.)
That is the point that God makes in Romans 3:23
Romans 3:23 KJV 1900
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
We are sinners of what we are and not of what we do. We do what we do (sin) because of what we are (sinners).

The Transitional Statement
Point #1
The 2 Key Verses: Romans 3:10 and Romans 3:23.
Know and explain the key words “none” and “all.” Be ready to give the explanations in class.
Know and give the illustration about the sin nature. Be ready to give the explanation in class.
Expand your ten-second testimony to a thirty-second testimony and have it prepared to share with the class.
TRANSITION STATEMENT #2 - “Unfortunately, according to the Bible, there is a terrible consequence for our sin.”

POINT #2 - They must understand there is PENALTY for their sin | Teach him/her that there is penalty/consequence for their sin.

KEY VERSE:
Romans 6:23 KJV 1900
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Here we are utilizing just the first part of this verse. There are two significant parts in this verse related to the gospel message. We will focus on the second part later in our presentation.
For now, the key is the phrase “the wages of sin is death.”
I always begin this point by noting the difference between a “wage” and a “gift.” This is important for our later point on receiving God’s gift.
“What is a wage? A wage is something that you earn. It is completely different than a gift. Gifts are freely given and freely recieved with no strings attached. A wage however means you have do something to get it. For example, those who work 40 hours a week at their job expect on payday to recieve their wages aka their paycheck. They have worked hard all week and deserve to recieve what they have earned. In the same way, we have earned something for our sin. it is called death. Note that the “wages of sin is death.” What is death? Death, in a simple definition, is separation. Anytime we lose someone in death we are separated from them. Their death separates us so that we are not able to talk to them, hug them, or spend time with them. It is the same with sin and our relationship with God. Our sin separates us from God. God’s nature is holy. Our nature is sin. God must, but His very nature, cast sin out of His presence. Thus, we are born sinners and already separated from God.”
Here is some further information concerning the concept of death in Scripture. God’s Word reveals three different kinds of death. They are as follows.
PHYSICAL DEATH - the soul is separated from the body according to James 2:26
James 2:26 KJV 1900
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
SPIRITUAL DEATH - a person is born already spiritually dead and separated from the life of God according to Ephesians 2:1
Ephesians 2:1 KJV 1900
1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
SECOND DEATH - eternal separation from the presence of God for all eternity in a place of torment according to Revelation 20:14
Revelation 20:14 KJV 1900
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
In Romans 6:23, God speaks about each person’s spiritual death. We are born that way. If we remain spiritually dead, we will die physically already spiritually dead and continue separated from God.
ILLUSTRATION: In the Garden of Eden, God allowed Adam and Even to eat fruit from all the trees save one. He reserved that one and commanded they not eat of it. However, as we know, Adam and Eve disobeyed His command and sinned. Yet, on that very day, they did not die physically. Instead, God judged them for their sin casting them out of the Garden placing angel as guard over the entrance. Essentially, Adam and Even died spiritually that day as their life of fellowship and communion died that day. They were separated from God’s presence. (Use your hands to illustrate this next thought) If Adam continues separated from God and dies without someone to save him, he dies in his sin still separated from God and is doomed for all of eternity. What does Adam have to do go to Hell? (Answer: He does nothing but simply keep going the way he is going.) We too are born in Adam’s likeness. We are born already sinners and spiritually dead. In the same way, there is nothing we must do to go to Hell. Our destiny from earth is eternal judgment in Hell.

The Transitional Statement
Point #2
The Key Verse: Romans 6:23
Know and explain the difference between a wage and a gift. Use the illustration provided. Be ready to share with the rest of the class.
List and explain the three deaths given in Scripture. Be ready to give the explanation in class.
Know the illustration of Adam and Eve and how it relates to man’s penalty of sin. Be ready to share it with the rest of the class.
Expand your thirty-second testimony to a sixty-second testimony and have it prepared to share with the class.
TRANSITION STATEMENT #3 - If the Bible were silent from this point on and nothing else was written, what hope would anyone have? We would have absolutely no hope! However, the GOOD NEWS is this. The story does not end. There is something special God did for all of us.

POINT #3 - They must understand that Christ PAID the penalty of sin and DIED for our sins upon the cross. | Teach him/her that Christ PAID their sin penalty by dying upon the cross at Calvary.

Key Verses:
Romans 5:8 KJV 1900
8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 6:23 KJV 1900
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The first verse is the hope we have. Romans 5:8 tells us that God “commendeth” His love to us. The word “commendeth” means showed, demonstrated, or proved. Thus, God proved and demonstrated how much He loves us that He willingly gave His Son, His most precious possession, for our sins. Christ came and He died for us. The amazing thing is that Christ is God. Thus, God Himself gave up Heaven and came to earth for basic reason. He came to die so that we might live. Our sin demanded penalty. Christ substituted Himself for us by dying in our place. He stepped in and paid the penalty we should have paid. In fact, the day Christ died, He took all the sins of men upon Himself. This was witnessed by the fact that great darkness covered the earth as He said, “My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Amazingly, it was noon when Christ gave up His spirit and died. When the sun was shining the brightest, everything around the cross became dark for it was at that moment our sins were place on Him.
2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV 1900
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Christ’s death paid our wage. Now, because of His death and subsequent resurrection, Christ has a gift for all who believe.
Romans 6:23 KJV 1900
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Before we discussed the difference between a wage and a gift. The second half of this verse tells us that God has a gift. A gift is something you receive with no strings attached. It is completely free.
ILLUSTRATION: Let’s pretend that I knew we were going to meet and have this conversation today. Knowing that, I decided to give a gift. I bought this pen for you. Again, let’s pretend that it is a beautiful, one of kind, gold pen with your name inscribed on the side. I bought it. It is a gift for you. When does it become yours? (At this point, I hold the pen out to them indicating that it is theirs and hoping they will respond with the answer. The answer is when I take possession of it.) The pen becomes yours when you reach out with hand and take it from mine. It is then in your possession. However, as long as the pen remains in my hand is still mine. A gift only becomes yours when you receive it. Just because Christ died for all of men’s sins doesn’t mean everyone is going to Heaven. No, it is only those who receive God’s gift by taking it for themselves. In Romans 6:23, the gift is eternal life. God is offering you eternal life. It is a free gift already purchased with the blood of Jesus Christ. (Share with them the following verse).
1 John 5:11–12 KJV 1900
11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
Romans 6:23 teaches that God’s gift of eternal life is located in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. The verses I just read say that anyone who has Christ has life. (At this moment, I ask for the pen again to demonstrated this important principle. I then place the pen in my Bible and tell them that the Bible represents the Lord Jesus Christ. The pen representing eternal life is now located in Christ.) God offers to you today eternal life. However, for you to receive this precious gift, you must also receive Christ. Eternal life is in Christ. By the way, God did not say be baptized and you will have eternal life. No, for if He had then it would be wage. You would be doing something to get it. He did not say become a church member or live a good life. No, again, if He had it would not be a gift, but a wage. Instead, God simply said receive Christ and you will receive eternal life.

The Transitional Statement
Point #3
The Key Verses: Romans 5:8 and Romans 6:23
Know and explain the word “commendeth.” Be ready to share with the rest of the class.
Know and be prepared to share the Pen Illustration in class.
TRANSITION STATEMENT #4: “Most religious people in America believe in Christ and even accept the fact that He died. However, they have no hope and no peace. Why? The Bible tells us why.”

POINT #4 - They must understand that if they will BELIEVE and RECEIVE Jesus Christ they will receive God’s gift of ETERNAL LIFE | Teach them that they must BELIEVE and RECEIVE Christ in order to receive God’s gift of ETERNAL LIFE.

Key Verses:
Romans 10:9–10 KJV 1900
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:13 KJV 1900
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
For this point, I like to emphasize a few key things.
First, I lead them back to the fact they must RECEIVE Christ. I do this by asking and stating the following:
“How does a person receive Christ? He is not here. We cannot put our arms around Him and say to Him, 'I believe in you and receive you.' How then does a person receive something they can physically touch or handle. The Bible has the answer. It is found in Romans 10.”
I then read them the verses and focus on two things. To receive Christ, we must “confess” with our mouth and “believe” in our heart.
The word “confess” is crucial for them to understand. It simply means “to agree with.” In this case, we are agreeing with God. We are agreeing that we are sinners, there is a penalty for our sin, and that Christ paid the penalty with His death, burial, and resurrection. I often use the following illustration to clarify the word “confess.”
ILLUSTRATION: “Most of us watch crime shows on TV. As with most of them, there is always some crime committed whether it be murder, robbery, or some other criminal offence. The person committing the crime tries to get away with it. The police detectives try to catch the criminal. The entire drama unfolds as they police build their case by discovering physical evidence that ties the criminal to the crime. The climax usually comes when they make the arrest, place the guilty person in a room and seek a confession. The confession is when the criminal overwhelmed by the evidence breaks down and admits they committed the crime. The confess by agreeing they did it in the manner that the evidence suggests. For us, it is no different. The Bible makes a compelling argument that we are guilty. We are sinners. There is a penalty for our sin. Christ paid the penalty and all we must do is accept God’s gift. Confession means that you and I agree with God and His Word.”
You then need to teach them about the word “believe.” There are many who say things with their mouth (confession), but deep down in their hearts they do not truly believe it. The word “believe” means to be fully persuaded to the point of taking action. A person who truly “believes” the gospel is one who will “repent” of their sin and “commit” to God’s way. It is important to note that Scripture says they must “believe” in their heart. In other words, there must a whole heart, soul, and mind commitment to the gospel. It is not a half way or two thirds commitment. No, it is total commitment that begins with repentance and ends with confession.
Now, note the promise.
Romans 10:9 KJV 1900
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
Romans 10:13 KJV 1900
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
In both verses, we have the following statements - “thou (you) shalt (will) be saved” and “whosoever…shall (will) be saved.” God’s promise is this. If you truly confess and believe, you will receive eternal life through Christ and be saved from the judgment that is to come.
Note also that is for “whosoever.” In other words, God’s invitation extends to all. It matters not what you have done or how big a mess you think you life to be, God loves you, Christ died for you, and eternal life can be yours. All you must do is “call upon the name of the Lord.” It is that simple.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

Memorize the following items:
The Transitional Statement
Point #4
The Key Verses: Romans 10:9-10 and Romans 10:13
Know and explain the word “confess” and be ready to share the illustration for this word with the rest of the class.
Know and explain the word “believe.” Be prepared to share with the rest of the class.
Know the three things that each person must agree with God and be ready to share them with the rest of the class.
TRANSITION STATEMENT #4 - “My friend, God desires to have a personal relationship with you. He wants you to have His gift of eternal life. For it to be yours, you simply need to confess (agree) that you are a sinner, there is a penalty for your sin, and Christ through His death, burial, and resurrection paid your penalty for your. Now, He stand ready to offer you eternal and spiritual life. Will you accept His offer? If so, then let us bow your heads and hearts in prayer, and let me pray for you.”
GOLDEN RULE #3 - NEVER EMBARRASS ANYONE!
It is vitally important that this point to be sure that you never embarrass anyone. We always want to leave them so that someone else can come along to help them. If you embarrass them by pressing them to do something that are not ready to do, you may cause them more harm than good. We must keep in mind that sometimes our job is to plant seed. Sometimes, we are to water seed already planted. And, then, there are times when we see the harvest. It this juncture of the conversation we are asking them to receive Christ. Some are ready and some are not. We need to be sensitive and tread carefully here.

STEP #1 - Pray with them!

After presenting them with the gospel, we must lead them to accept Christ. You cannot force anyone to do so and we must never attempt to do such a thing. Nevertheless, it behooves us to gently guide them to confession and belief. A good way to do this for you to pray for them. Already in the transition statement above you have moved in that direction. Now do it. Let them know that you are going to pray. Your prayer should be simple and direct. When you finish, do not end with the customary “Amen.” Instead, as both are in a state of prayer, use the following transition statement.
TRANSITION STATEMENT #5 - “While our heads are bowed, let’s imagine that the Lord Jesus Christ come into this very room right now. He is here. If Christ accepts you just like you are, and He will, will you accept Him just as He is? (You will need to peek open your eyes and watch them after asking the question. Many people will say affirm their answer by shaking their head yes instead of saying yes.)

STEP #2 - Lead them in a simple phrase-by-phrase prayer helping them receive Christ as Savior.

Let me emphasize something here. No one is saved by simply saying a prayer. Salvation comes by faith. Faith is predicated on them fully believing the gospel with their whole heart. We cannot see the heart. It is quite possible that someone believes and refuses to pray right then. That is okay. They may do it at a time when they are alone with God. Our attempt here is to simply help them with their prayer to Him. Again, let me remind you to be careful at this juncture. If they pray, praise the Lord, but remember prayer is only one side of the coin. They must believe as well. If they don’t pray, not all hope is lost. You gave a clear presentation, let God do the rest.
If then they agree to let you lead them, then here is a suggested prayer that incorporates the four things you have taught them from God’s Word.
PRAYER - “Dear Lord, I know that I am a sinner. I know from your Word there is a penalty for my sin. I believe that you died for my sins paying that penalty with your own blood. I believe you were buried and you resurrected from the grave. Please forgive me for my sin. I invite you into my heart and life. In the best way I know how, I am receiving you as my Savior. Amen.”
If, perhaps, the say “no” and refuse to let you lead them, fine. Again, we must be careful and leave them so someone else can be a witness as well. If you desire to press them a little, you might use the following approach.
Briefly explain Points 1-4 again and assure them that you are not asking them to join a church, etc.
Ask them if they...
Believe they are a sinner
Believe there is a penalty for their sin
Believe Christ paid the penalty with His own blood
If so, why not receive Him now.
You might ask some additional questions like...
Do you believe the Bible?
Do you believe God loves you?
Do you believe that God desires you have eternal life?
What would be a reason for not receiving Christ right now?
Again, be careful. I cannot emphasize this enough. If they still refuse to be led, then simply close in prayer with them thanking the Lord for the opportunity you had to share the gospel with them. You might also thank the Lord for their willingness to listen.
If they did pray, then here is the next step.

STEP #3 - Ask them some reaffirming questions.

There are two basic questions you should ask as you seek to reaffirm their commitment to Christ. They are as follows.
“Did you really mean the prayer in your heart?”
“Did you mean business with God?”
Here is another way you can do this.
“Pretend with me that there is no one else in the room but you, me, and the Lord Jesus Christ. He is standing physically right here with us. As He is standing there, He looks at you and says, “(Use their name), if you really received me as your Savior and you meant truly meant it, I want you to reach out and take my hand.” Would you do it? If so, would you demonstrate that same intent by reaching out and taking my Bible?”
If they do, then they are demonstrating in a public way that they truly meant their commitment to Him. At this point, move to the next step.

STEP #4 - Finish with a prayer of thanksgiving, rejoicing, and assurance.

This short prayer simply wraps your presentation of the gospel. Close with a prayer similar to this one.
“Dear Lord, thank you that (insert name) has received you as His Lord and Savior. Thank you that his/her sins are forgiven and that Heaven is now his/her home. Thank you for making them a part of your family. I ask that you would help him/her to be a great Christian and honor you with their life bringing glory to your name. Amen.”

STEP #5 - Teach them ASSURANCE of their salvation.

If time allow, it is important to cover assurance of salvation. One of the great misconceptions is often the belief that once saved a person will no longer sin. That is not the case. In fact, the opposite is true. They will continue to sin. If you do not teach assurance, when they do sin they will think they are no longer saved. Try your best to teach this important point. You can so by first asking this question after praying.
“Do you think you will sin again?”
If they answer yes, then fine, just remind them of God’s promise. If they answer no, then let me know that it is not the case. We all sin. However, what is different now is they belong to the Lord and now have His Spirit within them. He is there to help them overcome sin whereas before they were on their own. In a minute, we will give them 1 John 1:9. For now, take them back to Romans 10:13
Romans 10:13 KJV 1900
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Remind them that the word “whosoever” means anyone and everyone. Scripture assures that “whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Ask them this question.
“Did you just call upon the name of the Lord?” This verse is talking about you. What then is God’s promise? Whoever calls on His name WILL BE SAVED. Thus, according to Scripture, if you were to die right now, you will go to be with the Lord in Heaven. It is a promise based on God giving you eternal life. You now have restored fellowship with Him. So what happens when you do sin? It interrupts that fellowship. You do not lose the gift of eternal life. It is yours and you can never lose it. But sin does interrupt our fellowship with Him. Here is a good illustration!”
ILLUSTRATION: “Any child the disobeys his parent does not stop being their child. There is nothing a child can do to stop being a child of their parents. However, something does happen when they disobey. Fellowship between a parent and child is broken. Due to their disobedience, they may want an ice cream, but most likely they are not going to get it because of their disobedience. Yet, if they repent, ask forgiveness, and seek to make things right, fellowship is restored. Now, if they ask for an ice cream, the chances are higher they will get one because the relationship is good once again.”
“The same is true with us as God’s child. By the way, now that you have received Christ you are one of God’s adopted children. In fact, I am going to make a statement that you may not at first believe. Here it is. Now that you have received Christ as Savior there is NOTHING ELSE you must do to be a Christian, you have done it all. Let me illustrate it this way.”
ILLUSTRATION: “A married man does not work bringing home a paycheck to his wife so that one day he might be her husband. Instead, he brings home a paycheck to his wife because HE IS her husband and desires to take care of her. He seeks to be a GOOD husband to her. Now that you are believer and follower of Christ, what kind of follower do you want to be? There is nothing to be done to be a follower. That is finished. Now, your life is all about being a GOOD FOLLOWER of the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Now is a good time to point out that being a good follow of Christ means reading His word and praying daily so they might grow spiritually.

STEP #6 - Teach them that they need to make a public profession of salvation in the local church.

Again, as time allows, this another important follow action for every new believer. Note what Christ said in Matthew 10:32
Matthew 10:32 KJV 1900
32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
Romans 10:11 KJV 1900
11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
It is good for both the new believer and for other believers to know publically they have accepted Christ as Savior.
For the new believer, it helps them follow Christ’s instructions as well as overcome any personal fears as they identify with Christ. Be sure to explain that a public profession is not about joining a church. It is simply an act that please God as you say to others that you are now a follower of Christ. As they do it in a local church there is no embarrassment since the local church is comprised of other followers of Christ. In doing so, they not only identify with Christ but they enlist the prayers of others as they begin their new life in Him.
For other believers, a public profession of faith is encouraging. They too are excited to see someone come to Christ. Thus, it provides an opportunity for them to rejoice with them.
Please make sure that you speak with the Pastor setting up a time for them to come forward and make their public profession. When they do, come and stand with them. Help them take this wonderful step for the Lord.
GOLDEN RULE #4 - USE IT OR YOU WILL LOSE IT!

How to Overcome Some Obstacles in Witnessing

There are many obstacles and questions that stand in the way of witnessing. The great news is that we have God’s Word and His Spirit that assist with breaking down barriers. Utilizing them will help people see their need for a salvation that only God can provide through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Remember that you don’t have to answer every question. Yet, it is important to answer any questions related to the gospel message.
As with any endeavor to give the gospel, it is most certain that you will come across people who will say things to discourage and intimidate you. Don’t let them dissuade you from giving them the gospel. Remember Golden Rule #2 which is stay on track. People often use comments or questions that catch us unawares and for which we are unprepared. That is fine. Ask to set them aside and move on. There are many who people who are not familiar with the Bible. There are also many who have set up their own system of beliefs. Be careful about letting them knock you off track from the main objective of sharing the gospel message.
This section is a helpful guide in answering certain statements and questions that may be an obstacle for someone opening their hear to the gospel. Use it sparingly, but use it if needed.

“I’ve always been a Christian.”

Psalm 51:5 KJV 1900
5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; And in sin did my mother conceive me.
Explanation: No one is born a Christian. We are all born sinners. Many people who make this statement have grown up on a church and believe that their relationship with a church equals Christianity.
John 1:12 KJV 1900
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Explanation: No one inherits Christianity from their family. Being a Christian means that there was a time in your life when you put your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Salvation comes only when a person makes a conscious and personal decision to accept the sacrifice of Christ as payment for their sin.
John 3:3 KJV 1900
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Explanation: Being raised in church or simply begin a religious person, like Nicodemus (who was a ruler of the Jews and a Pharisee), doesn’t establish you a home in heaven. The only way is to be born again by putting your faith in Jesus.

“God is too loving to send anyone to hell.”

John 3:17–18 KJV 1900
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Explanation: God is loving, and that is why He sent Jesus to die. Every person is already condemned because of their own sin. In God’s love, He sent Jesus to bring us an escape from the condemnation of an eternal lake of fire.
2 Thessalonians 2:12 KJV 1900
12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
Explanation: God does not send anyone to hell. They send themselves. All who will believe and come to God by faith can receive His righteousness.
Hebrews 2:3 KJV 1900
3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
Explanation: There is no way to escape the condemnation of hell unless you accept by faith the great salvation of a loving, merciful, and gracious God.

“I’ll get saved later.”

James 4:13–14 KJV 1900
13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: 14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
Explanation: No one knows when they are going to die. We do know that when we die, we will spend eternity somewhere. You must make that decision now.
Proverbs 27:1 KJV 1900
1 Boast not thyself of to morrow; For thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.
Explanation: You never know if you will make it to tomorrow. Today may be your last day on earth. Are you prepared to step out into eternity today?
2 Corinthians 6:2 KJV 1900
2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)
Explanation: Because we do not know what the next five minutes, five days, or five years hold in store, today is the day to accept Jesus Christ as your Savior.

“If I’m good, I’ll get there.”

Galatians 2:16 KJV 1900
16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
Explanation: The law was a set of rules given by God for men to obey. Yet, God said that keeping those laws that He gave would not justify anyone before Him.
Romans 3:10–12 KJV 1900
10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Explanation: We may see ourselves as good when we compare ourselves to man’s rules or standards; however, when compared to god, nobody is good.
Titus 3:5 KJV 1900
5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Explanation: The best we can do, our “works of righteousness,” are not good enough to save us. Salvation comes through God’s mercy by faith in Christ.

“I’m too great a sinner.”

John 6:37 KJV 1900
37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
Explanation: Jesus promised that anyone who comes to Him by faith for salvation will receive it. He will not cast them out, no matter how bad.
Hebrews 7:25 KJV 1900
25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
Explanation: God is able to save the person who is guilty of murder just as easily as he is able to save a person raised in church. God is not a respecter of persons, and no sin has power over the blood of Christ.
1 John 1:7 KJV 1900
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
Explanation: The blood of Jesus Christ is able to save and cleanse us “from all sin.” Which sin does that exclude? None! He is able to forgive no matter the sin.

“I’m trying to get to heaven.”

Proverbs 14:12 KJV 1900
12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, But the end thereof are the ways of death.
Explanation: The problem is that the way which might seem right to us is not the right way. The only way is God’s way. I can try hard and do my best, but if I am traveling in the wrong direction and the wrong road, I will never reach my destination.
John 14:6 KJV 1900
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Explanation: Jesus is the only way to get to heaven. If you are trying to get to heaven any other way but Him, it is the wrong way. Everything else is futile.
Matthew 7:13–14 KJV 1900
13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Explanation: Most people try the way that seems the easiest, but the Bible tells us that the way to heaven is straight and narrow through Christ.

“I don’t think anyone can know for sure.”

1 John 5:13 KJV 1900
13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
Explanation: A person can KNOW with unquestioning certainty that they have eternal life. The requirement is that they believe on the “Son of God.” When someone puts their faith in Christ, God gives “without-a-doubt” salvation.
Romans 8:1 KJV 1900
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Explanation: The Bible tells us that when we have received God’s forgiveness by faith in Christ there is “no condemnation.” That is a statement of full pardon. A pardon is irreversible. God pardons the sinner that comes through Christ.
Romans 10:13 KJV 1900
13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Explanation: When a lost sinner calls “upon the name of the Lord” by faith for the forgiveness of their sins, God promises that they “shall be saved.” That is a definitive statement. There is no question as to whether God will save them.

“I’ve got too much to give up.”

Mark 8:36–37 KJV 1900
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? 37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Explanation: What good will it do keep your lifestyle or possessions and make them the focus of your existence? One day you will stand before God, and the only thing that will matter is whether or nor you accepted Christ as your Savior.
Galatians 6:7–8 KJV 1900
7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
Explanation: The main problem with not giving up our sin is that there is always a harvest time. The seed we sow, whether good or bad, always brings forth fruit of the same sort. The fruit of faith in Jesus Christ brings everlasting life.
1 John 2:16–17 KJV 1900
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Explanation: Everything in this life will pass away, including life itself. The only thing that will remain is your soul, and it will spend eternity somewhere.

“I pray every day.”

John 20:31 KJV 1900
31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
Explanation: Whether you talk to God every day or not is not the issue. Have you ever put your faith in the blood of Christ to forgive you of your sins?
Acts 16:31 KJV 1900
31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.
Explanation: Talking to God does not bring salvation. The only formula for salvation in the Bible is to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for your forgiveness.
Revelation 3:20 KJV 1900
20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
Explanation: To communicate with God on the outside of your heart’s door profits you nothing. You need to invite Him in by placing your faith in Jesus.

“I’m a member of a church.”

Acts 10:43 KJV 1900
43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.
Explanation: It is good to go to church and go faithfully; however, when we stand before God, the name of our church won’t matter. Have you put your faith and trust in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to “receive remission of sins?”
Acts 4:12 KJV 1900
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Explanation: There is not a church in existence that had the power to give salvation. The only one worthy to give salvation is Jesus Christ. When you die, if you want to be in heaven, you must be saved through faith in Christ.
1 Timothy 2:5 KJV 1900
5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
Explanation: No church or minister can be your mediator or advocate before God. The only mediator we have is Jesus, because He mediates with His blood.

“I’ve committed the unpardonable sin.”

John 3:18 KJV 1900
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Explanation: The only sin God will not forgive is the sin of unbelief. If a person does not put their faith in Christ for the forgiveness of sins, they will not receive the forgiveness of sin.
Mark 16:16 KJV 1900
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
Explanation: Once again, the Bible tells us that condemnation is present where faith is absent. God puts the emphasis of salvation on belief.
Luke 5:31–32 KJV 1900
31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. 32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Explanation: Jesus came to save people who see themselves as sinners. If you are genuinely concerned that you have blasphemed the Holy Ghost, and thereby have committed the unpardonable sin, you haven’t. If you did, you would worry. NOTE: The blasphemy of the Holy Ghost (Matthew 12:32) is the rejection of his conviction.

How to Refute False Doctrine

One of the reasons soul-winning is “confrontational” is due to the fact we often have to “confront” many false beliefs and teachings. Unfortunately, many who are steeped in religion and cults rarely accept the teachings of God’s Word. Yet, there are times when we have opportunities to do so and we must be prepared to answer them. It is important to remember you testimony for the Lord. Do not get into arguments or shouting matches. Such things only hurt the cause of Christ. If someone will not take God at His word, they surely are not going to take you at yours.
Keep in mind that many cults train their people confuse others with theological discussions. Anytime you find yourself going around in circles with such people, kindly excuse yourself and move on. The time spent arguing with a closed minded cultist is time that could have been spent winning someone else to the Lord. Ask the Lord for wisdom to know when people are or are not truly interested in the truth of God’s Word.
The following is a brief compilation of specific religions and cults listing their beliefs as well as Scripture to refute those false beliefs.

Catholic

Seven Sacraments - They believe salvation comes through the sacraments. This is the belief that the seven sacraments (sacred performances) are all part of salvation. The seven sacraments are:
Baptism - usually in the form of sprinkling of an infant to wash away “original” sins.
Eucharist - which is the Lord’s Table (for the Catholic the elements become the literal body and blood of Christ.)
Reconciliation - also known as Penance and is a way to pay for your own sins.
Confirmation - this is the study and pledge of devotion and allegiance to the Catholic church.
Marriage - must be married in the Catholic church or it is not considered sacred before God.
Holy Orders - this is devotion and allegiance to the Papal authority and to the Catholic priesthood.
Anointing of the Sick - which is the administration of Last Rights (a final pledge to faith in the Catholic church for salvation.”
See: Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:17-19.
Mariolatry - This is the belief that Mary is the “Mother of God,” and that she possesses the grace to grant eternal salvation. She is the advocate and mediatrix of the blood of Christ. The rosary is an object used to pray to Mary for the salvation of the soul.
See: John 2:5; 1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 9:14-15; 1 John 2:1.
Confession - This is the belief that one must confess their sins to a priest and receive absolution in order to be forgiven of everyday wrongs. Without confession you cannot keep your salvation.
See: Psalm 32:5; Matthew 23:8-10; 1 John 1:9.
Infant Baptism - This is the practice of sprinkling infants with “holy water” in order to wash away “original sin” and make them part of the Catholic church. These children will later go through their catechism and confirmation to reaffirm their devotion to the Catholic church.
See: Acts 2:41; Acts 8:12; Acts 18:8.
Purgatory - This is the belief that there is a place of temporary punishment in order to purge the soul from their sin. Thus, everyone will eventually get to heaven once they have paid a high enough price for their sins. This dogma is from the Apocryphal book of 2 Maccabees 12.
See: Luke 16:22-23; 1 John 1:7; Revelation 20:12-15; Revelation 21:27.

Church of Christ

Baptismal Regeneration - This is the belief that baptism is a part of salvation. They teach that it is the method by which God imparts His grace to sinners. The key verse they pollute is Acts 2:38.
See: Matthew 3:14-15; Acts 8:35-37; Acts 16:30-31; 1 Peter 3:20-21.
No Eternal Security - This is the belief that you can never be sure of your salvation. You must continue good works or you will lose salvation. The statement most often used is “fallen from grace.”
See: John 5:24; John 10:28-30; 1 John 5:13.
Salvation Through Works - This is the belief that you take part in your salvation by performing acts of “righteousness.”
See: Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:17-19.

Pentecostal

Signs and Wonders - This is the belief that miraculous events that took place by the hand of Jesus and the apostles are still in effect today. They also believe that they are evidence of salvation and spirituality. Therefore, to an extent, they believe you must perform these to be saved.
See: Acts 2:4-8; 1 Corinthians 1:22; 1 Corinthians 13:1-3; Revelation 13:13-14.
Baptism of the Holy Ghost - This is the belief that the Holy Ghost will baptize a person in His presence sometime after salvation, once they have reached a point of spiritual maturity.
See: John 16:13-14; Romans 8:9; Ephesians 1:13.
No Eternal Security - This is the belief that you can never be sure of your salvation. You must continue good works or you will lose salvation. The statement most often used is “fallen from grace.”
See: John 5:24; John 10:28-30; 1 John 5:13.
Unpardonable Sin - This is the belief that a person who sins against the Holy Ghost is unforgivable. This comes from a misinterpretation of Matthew 12:32 where Christ is speaking of those who reject the conviction of God. A person can say or do anything and still be forgiven if he will yield to the conviction of God about his sin and confess it believing in the blood of Christ.
See: John 3:18; Mark 16:16; Luke 5:31-32.

Seventh Day Adventist

Sabbath Day Observance -This is the belief that the Sabbath day is the most important law given. To not keep the Sabbath is to deny the right to salvation that comes from Jehovah. Something to observe is that Jesus substituted the Sabbath day command with “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God...”.
See: Matthew 22:36-38; Colossians 2:16-17; Acts 20:6; 1 Corinthians 16:2.
Total Annihilation - This is the belief that a denier of the “faith” will be completely annihilated. They do not believe in everlasting punishment, only in everlasting reward.
See: Mark 9:44-48; Revelation 14:10-11; Revelation 20:10.
Deny a Literal Burning Hell - This is the belief that hell is figurative and not a real, literal place of fire.
See: Luke 16:22-23; 1 John 1:7; Revelation 20:12-15; Revelation 21:27.
Investigative Judgment - This is the belief that Christ entered into the Holy of Holies in 1844 and began to investigate the actions of men to see if he is keeping the law. However, the Bible tells of only two judgments that will take place after one is dead, the Judgment Seat of Christ (for the saved) and the Great White Throne Judgment (for the lost).
See: 2 Corinthians 5:9-10; 2 Timothy 4:8; Revelation 20:11-15.
Salvation Through Works - This is the belief that you take part in your salvation through acts of “righteousness.” The Seventh Day Adventist believe in keeping the Old Testament laws, including the dietary laws.
See: Romans 3:19-20, 28; Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:17-19.

Jehovah’s Witness

Total Annihilation - This is the belief that when a person dies without being one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, they pass into oblivion. They believe that there is no punishment or after life for those who have rejected the “truth” that they teach.
Deny the Deity of Christ - This is the denial of the Biblical fact that Jesus is God the Son. No one who denies this can be called a “Christian.” To deny the Godhood of Jesus Christ is the greatest heresy there is.
See: Matthew 1:23; John 1:1-4, 14; John 20:28; Philippians 2:10-22; 2 John 1:9.
Deny the Resurrection of Christ - This is the belief that the literal, bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ didn’t occur. Jehovah’s Witnesses like to spiritualize things in Scripture that they do not agree with. This is one of them.
See: Luke 24:38-39; John 20:27; 1 Corinthians 15:12-19.
Deny the Trinity of God - This is the belief that God is one, singular being. They deny the existence of the Holy Spirit and Jesus as part of the Godhead. This is primarily because they do wish to accept Jesus Christ as being God.
See: Matthew 3:16-17; John 10:30; John 14:9; 1 John 5:7.
Deny the Literal Second Coming of Christ - This is the denial that Jesus will come again to rapture the saved and then return to reign for one thousand years before destroying the earth. This denial is due to the fact that Jehovah’s Witnesses teach that Jehovah will come and set them up as the rulers of the earth for eternity.
See: Matthew 3:16-17; John 10:30; John 14:9; 1 John 5:7.
Salvation Through Works - This is the belief that you take part in your salvation by performing acts of “righteousness.” Jehovah’s Witnesses are some of the most dedicated door-to-door witnesses of their faith. This is because they believe they must do this in order to be worthy of the Kingdom.
See: Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:17-19.

Mormon

Man Can Become a God (demigod) - This is the belief that man is the offspring of God and his wives. Therefore, as the literal children of God, man can attain godhood of his own planet in eternity. He will then populate his planet through his many wives and start is own eternal process.
See: Psalm 51:5; Isaiah 14:12-15; Romans 3:23.
Many Mormons will spiritualize the resurrection of Christ or claim it to be figurative.
See: Luke 24:38-39; John 20:27; 1 Corinthians 15:12-19.
Deny the Trinity of God - This is the belief that God is one, singular being. They deny the existence of the Holy Spirit and Jesus as part of the Godhead. This is primarily because they do wish to accept Jesus Christ as being God, and it promotes their teaching that we all are capable of being gods.
See: Matthew 3:16-17; John 10:30; John 14:9; 1 John 5:7.
Salvation Through Works - This is the belief that you take part in your salvation by performing acts of “righteousness.” Mormon missionaries are gathering converts and names in order to earn their salvation and their own planet in the universe.

Reformed Theology (Calvinist)

T =Total Depravity of Man - This is the belief that man is totally depraved that he has no ability to cry out to God for salvation. The only way to be saved is for God to choose you.
See: John 1:12; John 3:16; Acts 17:30-31; 2 Peter 3:9.
U = Unconditional Election - This is the belief that God has “sovereignly” chosen in eternity past who will and who will not get to heaven. It is unconditional, and that includes coming to Him by faith in the blood of Christ. If He didn’t choose you, you are going to hell.
See: Romans 8:29; 1 Peter 1:1-2.
L = Limited Atonement - This is the belief that the atonement of Christ is limited to those selected by God to go to heaven. It is not a free gift offered to all who will believe, only to the chosen.
See: John 1:12; Romans 5:8; 1 Timothy 2:6.
I = Irresistible Grace - This is the belief that God imposes His grace forcefully upon the depraved sinner and then lets Him know that He is the one of the “elect.” You cannot resist His grace. You will be saved if God chose you, and you have neither a choice nor opinion in the matter.
See: Romans 10:9-13; James 4:7; Revelation 22:17.
P = Perseverance of the Saints - This is the belief that only those who keep living a good life are truly the elect. Therefore, the only way to be elect is to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.”
See: John 10:28-30; Ephesians 1:13-14; Hebrews 13:5.

Conclusion

Let’s conclude with some practical advice. Here are some things that have proven to be effective with giving the gospel to others.

Be Prepared

Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance
God can use anyone, at anytime, no matter the content of their personal wisdom; however, we should study and prepare to ensure we are not an hindrance to someone understanding and accepting the gospel. Make sure you study God’s Word so that you might smoothly present the gospel. Take appropriate steps in utilizing the Bible as you talk to others about Christ. Here are some easy things you can do as you prepare to witness.
Memorize the verses related to the gospel plan. - When giving the Scripture during a gospel presentation, try your best to allow the person to whom are witnessing see the verses. When you do, you often find yourself holding the Bible upside down from your perspective. Memorizing the verses allow you to quote the verse as the other person reads it from the Bible.
Underline or highlight the verses in your New Testament or Bible. - This will help in several ways. First, it allows you to browse through your Bible quickly as you refresh yourself on those verses. Second, it makes it easier for you to find the verses quickly as you are presenting the gospel. Third, it makes it easier to point out verses to individuals as you are witnessing.
Mark your New Testament or Bible for smoother presentations. - It can be very helpful to write the page number and reference for the next verse in your gospel presentation at the bottom of each page in you Bible that contains the verse you are using. (i.e. Next > Romans 6:23 > pg 1234)

Stay In God’s Word

There is no doubt that we need God’s power so we might be effective witnesses. Be sure that you are spending personal time each with the Lord in His Word. Additionally, it is good to occasionally go back and review the passages used in the gospel presentation. It will help memorization and will keep them fresh in your mind. Equally important is that you study God’s Word in its entirety. As you do, God will give new passages that you will want to add to your memorization as well.

Stay Focused

This suggestion builds upon Golden Rule #2 which says, “Stay on Track!” If you don’t stay on track neither will the person to whom you are witnessing. Seek to always keep the conversation pointed towards the gospel. As you stay focused, you will quickly realize if the person is truly interested about knowing Christ. Someone who continues to change the subject or shows disinterest is probably not ready to receive Christ. It would be best to kindly end the conversation and move on. You can alway come back later when they have more interest.

Speak the Truth in Love

Soul-winning is confrontational. There is no doubt about that. However, we must be careful not have confrontational attitude, demeanor, or presentation. Pushing people away with an overly aggressive attitude does not help the cause of Christ or your efforts to witness for Him. If a person is not interested, move on. Always leave a person in such a way that you can come back to them again. Here are few key rules.
Be Pleasant - Don’t wear you personal feelings or problems on your face. If you’ve had a bad day, it is not their fault or problem. They are a lost soul in need of Savior. Avoid being rude in any way. Do not be aggressive. Never take it personally when someone doesn’t want to listen.
Be extremely careful about saying things like “you’ll have plenty of time someday,” “you better hope you don’t die today,” and “you’ll wish you had listened when you’re in hell one day.” Such statements have no place in our witnessing. It is not our duty to do the Holy Spirit’s job. We are simply God’s mouthpiece and nothing more. Never force the gospel presentation on someone.
Instead, our attitude should be warm and positive when we talk about the Lord to others. Always keep in mind that we are seeking to help them see their need for Christ. He is the One Who will make a difference in their lives. We must be shining the light of Jesus Christ to every person we meet and share the gospel. It is important to remember that John 3:16 does not begin with “For God so hated sin;” it begins with “For God loved the world...” We should also remember that focal point of the gospel is God showing His love so men are no longer under condemnation. In then end, is only through the conviction of the Holy Spirit a person is drawn to Christ and their need for Him as Savior.
Be Perceptive - If someone says, “I don’t have time right now,” understand they really might not have the time right then to listen. You can always ask when a “better time” might be for you to talk to them. If they give you a time, follow up and be sure to go back.
Also, be perceptive to other problems of life that might be happening. Your perception could lead to a real and deep conversation opening the door for gospel. Sometimes the best way to the gospel is through people’s problems. If we can give them answers to the issues that are bringing brokenness, heartache, and stress, we have opened the door to giving them the answer to their greatest need which is salvation.
Be Polite - Always be aware of your surroundings. Anytime we meet people, we should exhibit a polite manner. Rude behavior will ruin future opportunities. Be sure, as already stated, to leave the door open for future witnessing.
These are only a few tips and points about witnessing. They are guidelines and nothing more. It is important that you develop your own style and structure as witness for Christ. Our hope and prayer is this class helps in equipping you to be the light and salt God desires in this dark world of sin.
