Jesus’ Prayer – Part 2
The Grounds for Jesus Prayer for His Disciples
I.
The ‘who’ of his prayer (vv. 6-8)
A. The men God gave Jesus (v. 6)
1. The men to whom Jesus revealed God
2. The men God gave Jesus out of the world
3. The men who obeyed God’s word
B. The men that know Jesus came from God (vv. 7-8)
1. What they knew (v. 7)
- That Jesus was the Word
2. How they knew it (v. 8)
a. What Jesus did
- He gave them God’s words
b. How the disciples responded
1) They received God’s words
2) They came to know Jesus came from God
3) They believed God sent Jesus
II. The ‘why” of his prayer (vv. 9-11)
A. The ‘who’ clarified and contrasted (v. 9a)
B. Why Jesus is praying for them (vv. 10-11a)
1. Reason # 1 (v. 9b)
- Because they belong to God
2. Reason # 2 (v. 10)
a. Because they also belong to Jesus…
b. And Jesus is glorified in them
3. Reason # 3 (v. 11a)
a. Because Jesus is returning to heaven…
b. But the disciples will remain in the world
