Sermon Tone Analysis

Intro: The first four commandments tell us how to have a successful relationship with a holy God.

The last six turn to our relationship with others.

The home/family is the heart of any society, its the training center for living under God’s rule for every part of of our life.

How we act in society depends on how we are taught and act at home.

Text; Exodus 20:12

1. Honor Your Parents; 12a

Honor- high respect, great esteem, weigh heavily upon

Honor has to be taught before it can be caught.

Parents must teach their kids about respect for authority for them to give respect to authority.

Respect for authority begins at home.

It determines how well we function at school, at work, in our marriages, and in every area of human relationships.

How do we teach our children to respect us and others?

Turn to [Deut 6]

[v.

1-3] Teaches parents to fear the Lord and observe His commands [Be a good example]

[v.

4-6] We are to love the Lord God with all our heart.

[v.7] Teach them diligently [to be conscience of God’s will, and to take care in fulfilling our duty in serving Him] Our walk needs to match our talk!

Matthew 23:1–3 (NKJV)

1 Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples,

2 saying: “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat.

3 Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.

d. [v.8] God’s word needs to be a part of our everyday life.

Our hands speak of what we do and our eyes speak of what we see.

e. [v.9] Doorposts and gates represent your home.

Your house needs to be known to the community as a place where God is welcome.

10-19] Beware not to forget the Lord and his faithfulness.

Remember who you were before Him and who you are now in Him.

g. [v.

20-25] Children are curious creatures and will start asking questions about the way you do things or why you do certain things.

Praying before a meal, going to church, reading your Bible, helping the needy, etc… This gives you a great opportunity as a parent to tell them about Jesus and lead them to faith in Christ.

When we honor our parents and teach our kids to do the same, this can be passed through generations for their good, God’s glory and the spiritual growth of a nation.

2. Live long; 12b

The promise that comes with this command is exclusive to the nation of Israel.

This promise is not that if you obey this command you will live a long life, it refers to the nation as a whole being settled and at peace in the land of Canaan while they remain in a covenant relationship with God.

When a people begin to reject the God given authority over their lives [parents] then that people have rejected God.

Israel did this and were cast out of their land.

Read the Book of 1&2 Kings, 1&2 Chronicles and you will see how some kings honored their parents and the Lord leading Israel in righteousness and others didn’t and turned to idols leading Israel into evil, wickedness and abominations.

New Testament principle to this command;

If we honor our parents then we will be honoring God and there is the promise of the likelihood of long life on the earth.

If we honor God with our lives, we will live an abundant life in Him until the day He calls one home.
