Redemption

This message is going to be a little different than our usual Communion Service message.
The word redemption… We have to start somewhere.
This idea for redemption has its roots deep in the Old Testament.
By definition (Redemption)...
“Redemption relates to deliverance from a situation or from enemies.
Most often, this involves paying a price to “buy back” the person or thing that is being ransomed.
The word most frequently expresses the process of delivering someone from slavery or exchanging a ransom for something that belongs to God.
--------------------
Old Testament Origins
The two Hebrew root words associated with redemption are:
1. גָּאַל (ga'al), meaning “redeem” or “act as a kinsman-redeemer”
2. פָּדָה (padah), meaning “ransom” or “redeem”
This idea of a “Kinsman Redeemer” should remind of the story of Ruth.
— Ruth was a Moabite woman who refused to abandon her mother-in-law
— Ruth was unconnected to God, she willingly went with Naomi as they returned to Israel.
— Ruth’s mother-in-law sent Ruth away, hoping that she would come back… And she did.
----------------------
SOME SCRIPTURE
Ruth 1:16–18 ESV
16 But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. 17 Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.” 18 And when Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more.
-----------------
Naomi and Ruth return to Isreal and immediately need to find something to eat.
Naomi goes out into a field and begins to pick fruit, grains that have been left behind this field was owned by Boaz. Today we have a name for what she is doing… she is “gleaning”
Ruth 2:11–13 ESV
11 But Boaz answered her, “All that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband has been fully told to me, and how you left your father and mother and your native land and came to a people that you did not know before. 12 The Lord repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge!” 13 Then she said, “I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, for you have comforted me and spoken kindly to your servant, though I am not one of your servants.”
-----------------------
Ruth and Naomi’s lives where changed forever after that.
Ruth marries Boaz and he gives her very specific instructions on managing the land that is available.
Ruth is lineage of Jesus
Matthew 1:5 ESV
5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse,
----
Of course, the very next generation is that of Jesse, and King David will be born
Matthew 1:6 ESV
6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah,
So we are up against a series of “gotta” and “have-to’s”
We must have redemption:
For our sinful minds,
hearts,
actions
REDEMPTION MUST INCLUDE THE SHEDDING OF BLOOD
Hebrews 9:22 AMP
22 [In fact] under the Law almost everything is purified by means of blood, and without the shedding of blood there is neither release from sin and its guilt nor the remission of the due and merited punishment for sins.
--------
There is something unique about this relationship that we have with the Creator and The Son.
We can and will sin… I Promise
But knowing that all sin is ultimately covered in the blood of Christ.
That is teaching from scripture about the necessary blood that is shed and claimed for forgiveness of sin.
So… There is no forgiveness without the shedding of blood.
The Christian Church has been celebrating “Communion” although they didn’t call by the name since early in the 4th century.
Let me read a bit as the communion was celebrated in the 4th century.
The 4th century Gentile theologian Cyril of Jerusalem left a more detailed and ritualistic instruction for Communion.
Using a document called the Didache Cyril’s instructions emphasize technique:
“Approaching (Communion)…come not with your palms extended and stretched flat nor with your fingers open. But make your left hand as if a throne for the right, and hollowing your palm receive the body of Christ saying after it, Amen. Then after you have with care sanctified your eyes by the touch of the holy Body, partake of the elements.
You will note that it is not much different than we do communion today.
Turn if you will to Hebrews Chapter 9 Verse 11
Hebrews 9:11 ESV
11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation)
So as we look at this verse we see several things about our Communion Liturgy.
— We need a “High Priest” to partake and demonstrate the communion service.
— Then through “the greater and more perfect tent.” Which is the tabernacle, temple, tent. All have the same sense.
Where is the tabernacle now?
The temple during the 40 years “wandering” was contained in a tent.
The tent of put up, outside the village and it contained the elements for worship.
A permanent temple was built in the days of Solomon.
Of course we know that “Temple” was built and re-built over the centuries.
What is in Israel now is the remaining piece of the last temple, the western wall or the wailing wall.
So the question remains… Where is the temple/tabernacle now?
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 NLT
19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, 20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
We are, all of us, if you are a believer in Jesus and his work of REDEMPTION, A Temple.
No longer, never do we have to go to the temple… We have him, 100% of Him inside of us.
Praise God that he has made this available. Redemption was VERY costly. But
by His Stripes we are healed!
That is really great that we have this Temple inside of us.
What saddens God is what we do with The Temple...
— Every time that you sin… we bring dishonor to the Temple.
— Nothing can remake that relationship until you and God are on speaking terms again.
— That is REDEMPTION! Returning our bodies and souls to the place of communion with God through the blood of Christ!
I want to get some really important verses
Hebrews 9:12 ESV
12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
-------------
Because of shedding of his blood and our acceptance of that we have secured eternal redemption!
-------------
Hebrews 9:13–14 NLT
13 Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity. 14 Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.
------------------
Paul or the writer here emphatically states that Jesus, offered himself up, without blemish. To be our blemish and to redeem us from all of those transgressions.
WE ARE FREE BECAUSE OF THE BLOOD OF CHRIST!
We can claim the “blood of Christ” in any situation were it’s needed. There is power in that statement… there is forgiveness in that statement.
Vs. 15
Hebrews 9:15 ESV
15 Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.
Therefore — In summary of
He is the mediator — He stands up for us, by the Grace of God. He goes to God with us and for us.
So that those who call may receive the “promised eternal inheritance.”
Jump forward if you will to Vs.22
Hebrews 9:22 ESV
22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
Thank God that this sacrifice on the cross was made. And is available for all of us!
I’m going to skip ahead a little as we transition our Communion.
Hebrews 10:19–23 NLT
19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven’s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. 20 By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. 21 And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God’s house, 22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.
If you are a believer, we can enter the holy place. — That space happens in our hearts and minds as we focus alone on Jesus.
That is this space, our space. It is ANY PLACE. Because the temple, tent goes with us!
As we take time to confess our sin before receiving the elements, pray that your heart be made whole, By the blood of Jesus.
Pray that your heart is clean from evil conscience and is washed with pure water.

Communion

OK so we are clean, we are good with God and with our fellow man.
IF you are not in any of those ways ready… Pause and ask God for forgiveness of your sin.
If your burden is too great, I suggest that you let communion pass you by. Take the time to pray.
To do the work that Christ asks us to do.
When your heart, mind and soul are ready please partake of the elements.
Matthew 26:26–28 NLT
26 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, 28 for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.
There it is… Communion!
I will state LOUDLY here… Communion with other believers is VITAL!
Being part of a family is VITAL
Sharing with others your victories and your defeats, shows the world that your a blessed forgiven person.
Communion is the beginning of leading a redeemed live
What’s next...
I’ve said it 100 times… Sharing your faith and using words if you have to.
Acts 2:42–47 NLT
42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. 43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.
Servers Please Come!
1 Corinthians 11:23–26 NLT
23 For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread 24 and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.” 26 For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.
