Making much of Jesus
And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
Everyone has to die once, then face the consequences. Christ’s death was also a one-time event, but it was a sacrifice that took care of sins forever. And so, when he next appears, the outcome for those eager to greet him is, precisely, salvation.
Reasons we need to be making much of Jesus:
I. BECAUSE EVERYONE HAS AN UPCOMING APPOINTMENT – “…it is appointed for man to die once…”
II. BECAUSE EVERYONE WILL FACE THE JUDGMENT – “…after that [appointment] comes judgment…”
The Two Judgments:
A. The judgment seat of Christ
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
B. The Great White Throne judgment
Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
III. BECAUSE JESUS HAS PAID THE PRICE FOR OUR SINS – “…having been offered once to bear the sins of many…”
IV. BECAUSE JESUS IS COMING AGAIN – “[Jesus] will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for Him.”
