Call to Worship
Luke 19:39–40 NKJV
39 And some of the Pharisees called to Him from the crowd, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.” 40 But He answered and said to them, “I tell you that if these should keep silent, the stones would immediately cry out.”
Giving
Matthew 6:21 NKJV
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
“Discipleship Cost Everything”
Matthew 8:18–22 NKJV
18 And when Jesus saw great multitudes about Him, He gave a command to depart to the other side. 19 Then a certain scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” 20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 21 Then another of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

1. Disciples are different then the crowds.

Matthew 8:18 NKJV
18 And when Jesus saw great multitudes about Him, He gave a command to depart to the other side.
we are born into this world; to a certain degree we are more comfortable with this world than we are with our spiritual life. we have ebs and flows in faith.
the crowds see the healings, the eat the meals, they here the messages. but they don’t see the cost.
no mater where you are in the kingdom, there will be a time when you feel almost like you could walk on water. God uses us like that! that’s real! lets not blow past that and act like that’s not real because it is. Let’s also say this is not the whole picture. in order to grow we to crucify the flesh.
Galatians 5:24 NKJV
24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
how we crucify the flesh? we get uncomfortable with the trappings of the world.
two things here:
1. Jesus is trying to differentiate the kind of material supremacy that the pharisees have.
2. Jesus is about to explain that the things of this world are not the highest priority in the Kingdom.
now, it needs to be said, i’m not about to say, we all need to be balanced, we have to have some things to make it. a roof over our head, ect ect. but or highest values need to be the kingdom.

2. Jesus declares to the world He is homeless.

Matthew 8:19–20 NKJV
19 Then a certain scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.” 20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
scribes where a stepping stone on the way to being a Rabbi.
when we see this word ‘scribe’ in the bible we know that they could read and write. most of our society can read and write so I think a glance at this can be really easy to miss the point.
they where more than literate. they had copied the law perfectly. without the slightest error.
After a season of being a in a Journeyman role for some time and being with a popular Rabbi, then I would be a master.
Rabbis enjoyed a comfortable living in the committees.
Jesus is telling the scribe that he is barking up the wrong tree.
you are not going to be a powerful teacher on the back of my momentary popularity.
Jesus knew that what this man was looking for. He is saying, “I’m not going to be providing you a life, find another teacher.”
this is not that unusual even today.
get enough education.
serve in the right churches.
get a church of your own big enough to pay you what your worth and you can still serve God.
now let me be clear. I’m not throwing stones.
I hope that we grow to the place where I can hire payed staff.
I hope that we can get to the place where we plant churches. Ect. Ect.
but if it never grows beyond where it is now its a call that we all have not a career.
its ok for preachers to make a living that is commensurate with their pay and years.
but i’m called! to lead a people! if God wants me to make a certain amount of money, He called me here, he expects me to do my part and he will do His.

3. The call to discipleship is all consuming.

Matthew 8:21–22 NKJV
21 Then another of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
let the dead bury the dead,
families are not as important as God.
this doesn't mean that I get to blow off my family relationships
Luke 11:42 NKJV
42 “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.
