12 Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. 13 And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles: 14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; 15 Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot; 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor. 17 And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases, 18 as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits. And they were healed. 19 And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all.
Introduction: Things are beginning to shift a bit. Christ is preparing men for His departure.
He saw the need for intentional and intense prayer (Vs. 12)
A disciple in many ways was an apprentice and learner while an apostle was a chosen messenger with a specific mission. Apostles were usually commissioned to go.
Why does the text state that He prayed all night?
First, I believe it discusses the intensity in which He was praying.
Heb. 5:7-11, Luke 22:41-44
41 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
“Vehement cries-”intense manner”
“more earnestly”-Great drops of blood- expresses that Christ also faced stress as a man.
My recent conviction on prayer-
Challenge to the church to come looking for opportunities to lift each other up in prayer. Are we seeking a more earnest and intentional prayer life?
Two reasons He was praying- Opposition was growing, and He was seeking to call 12 apostles.
2) He desired to see men change, remain faithful, with the potential of impacting others through the Lords power.
Men to conduct His future ministry.
Vs 13-16
Why Judas and Why Thomas?”
John 6:64 explains that Christ knew from the beginning. John 6:60-70
60 Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?” 61 When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained about this, He said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. 65 And He said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.” 66 From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. 67 Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” 68 But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?”
Perhaps Christ felt that God desired these men included.
Take notice that Peter is always mentioned first in all the accounts, while Judas Iscariot is mentioned last (excluding Acts 1).
“Zealot”= Possibly was to denote that Simon was a fanatical jew or “Quanna” which denotes “Jealous for God zealous for God’s honor”
Iscariot could be derived by location and culture, or perhaps the root word “Segar” which literally means “Falsehood”.
This selection process was much like a draft that we would see in our day today. Many are listed as disciples, but only a few are selected as Apostles.
Perhaps extra prayer was designated for certain names? John 6:64
64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him.
24 The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
There are a few reasons why Judas may have been chosen.
Judas fits the plan of God (1 Peter 3:18)
To fufill prophecy (Matt. 26:24)
24 The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”
18 “I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’
16 “Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus;
3) God’s Sovereign Plan had to be accomplished (Acts 2:23)
23 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death;
3) He came down to meet them where they were at. Vs 17
-Figuratively and Physically
_No matter the distance, there was a process in which He sought his people.
7 who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear, 8 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.
“Obedience by the things which He suffered”
This is a process!
4) He desired to restore people so that they may believe.
“While we were yet sinners’, Christ died for us. (Judas).
Power went out of Him
This interaction takes place before a great sermon. All so that they may realize that the life in which Christ offers is a blessing!
