Why does membership in a local church matter?

The Local Church is the institution given divine authority. It is where Christ says.

Matthew 16:19 ESV

19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

The local church has authority - to include and exclude. - Therefore membership in the church is not like membership at the local civics club. You don’t join a church you submit.
