The Lord’s Supper

Matthew 26:17-30

Mark 14:12-26

Luke 22:7-23

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 “For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”

The start of the Lord’s Supper portrays the event as a passover meal.

Luke 22:14-15 “And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.”

This was the start of the Festival of Unleavened Bread - this is the festival the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.

Luke 22:7-8 “Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.””

The Passover - celebration of the deliverance of the Israelites from death and slavery in Egypt and marked the start of the Exodus from Egypt.

they had to kill a perfect lamb and sprinkle its blood over the door post to the death angle would passover their house and not kill their first born.

the next morning is when Pharaoh sent them away.

Christ wanted His disciples to understand that his death on the cross, (offering of his body and blood) was in the same way a recapitulation and summation of the deep meaning of the Passover meal. He was the deliverance from a deeper slavery ( sin) shared by the whole world not just Israel.

Do This in remembrance of Me

When we take the cracker we eat in remembrance of Jesus

When we take the Juice and drink we do this in remembrance of Jesus

I. What did Christ do?

Jesus performed miracles

Jesus healed the sick, walked on water, raised the dead, calmed the sea, and turned water into wine.

Those miracles fulfilled ancient prophecies and demonstrated His divinity.

They also show Jesus Christ’s infinite compassion for us.

Divine teachings

Jesus was the greatest teacher who ever lived.

He often used parables, or stories, to teach important lessons that we can still learn from today. Jesus died for us

He was Mercy

Throughout His life, many were angry with Jesus because He condemned hypocrisy.

He taught unfamiliar truths

showed compassion to sinners.

He demonstrated incredible power

The night before He was killed, Jesus retreated to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. There, He felt the weight of every sin and pain known to humankind and suffered for every person who has ever lived.

He betrayed, arrested, mocked, beaten, and crucified on the cros

John 10:17-18 “For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.””

On the cross He calls our Lord have mercy on them for they don’t know not what they do

He was the New Covenant

1 Corinthians 11:25 “In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.””

Old Covenant -

for Israel

Obedience based

Obey God he protects them.

they could not live perfectly under it

if showed they couldn’t save themselves by it

they would need a savior

Jesus fulfills the law

Matthew 5:17 ““Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”

New Covenant

Was for everyone

Romans 10:13 “For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.””

Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Free gift of God

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

II. What did Christ do for you?

What is you story?

I was 8 years old laying in my bed

I understood I was a sinner and needed saved

I pray for Jesus to save me

HE DID

I have not lived a perfect life.

spent lots of years living for me.

Christ did not give up on me.

In my 30’s I recommitted my life to him

i got serious about my relationship with him.

He started using me to teach Sunday school, bible studies, youth. pulpit supply

To be a pastor

He gives me a reason to live. He is all i need

He gives me grace and mercy

He gives me peace and comfort.

He gives me strength and power.

Do this in remembrance of me - What has He done for you

you can’t remember something that hasn’t happened.

If you can’t remember it’s because you have not been saved

Who observes the Lords Supper.

Those who belong to the body of Christ.

Have you been saved and baptized ?

Salvation - surrendering your life to christ

admitting your a sinner.

admitting you can’t do anything to save your self and you are at the mercy of God.

asked God for forgiveness

you have a desire to live for Him.

2. Baptism - other ordnance we observe as a church

first act of obedience - christ was baptised before He started His earthly ministry

Testimony - its a picture of the death and burial of Christ. and the resurrection of Christ.

you burred the old sinful self - raised to walk in a new life.

Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Christens who are blameless before God

Not sinless - but have confessed their sin before God.

Not being baptized is not being obedient to God.

Disobedient is sin.

Confess your sin and be blameless

1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Matthew 3:6 “and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.”

1 John 2:1 “My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”

Christens who are one with the body of Christ

Matthew 5:23-24 “So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.”

1 Corinthians 11:27-29 “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.”

Closing:

Next week we will observe the Lord’s Supper.

I want us as a whole to be ready to take communion

blameless before God, and one as a body.

Parents if you have a child that has not excepted Christ yet.

don’t let them take of it. but use that as a change to enplane what is going on and one day when they surrender to Christ they will be able to take of it.

Students and Adults - if you have never made a public perfesssion of faith and been baptized I am going to ask you not to take. it.

But their is time. TODAY - you can be saved. we have time to baptize you this week.

Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”

Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 5:8 “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 10:9-10 “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”

Romans 10:13 “For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.””

John 6:47-51 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.””

John 6:58 “This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.””
