Read all of Luke 10:38-42.
Martha
Verse 40a — “Distracted with all her preparations”
Now, was it bad that Martha was anxiously preparing and cleaning her house for Jesus? No!
Verse 40b — “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do al the serving alone?”
Here, we discover what really mattered to Martha. It was not having Jesus in her home. It was her showing
Verse 41 — “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things...”
3 Worries of the Modern Age
Possessions
We live in a world wanting more. A “winner takes all” type of world. We buy new things, but new things become old very quickly. And we end up in a cycle of
A text that reminds me of the temporary nature of possessions is Matthew 6:19-21.
People Pleasing
There is nothing bad about pleasing others, but when it becomes an obsession then it becomes sinful. The person who if asked for a favor will always say yes out of fear of displeasing someone.
A text that reminds me of who I should focus on is Galatians 1:10.
Pride
“I’m right and you’re wrong”
In the church, people use their own self-righteousness to differentiate themselves from others.
A text that keeps my pride in check is James 4:10.
TRANSITION: Verse 42a — “But only one thing is necessary”
What is that one thing?
Mary
Verse 42b — “Mary has chosen the good part”
What part has Mary chosen? Where was Mary when Jesus was saying these words? At His feet, listening to Jesus. You can imagine the look upon Mary’s face. A look of wonder, love, and connection.
Your personal, intimate relationship with Jesus
Verse 42c — “Which will not be taken away from her”
Jesus says that your personal, intimate relationship with Him CANNOT be taken away from you.
The devil can take everything away from you. People can manipulate you. The world can deceive you. And natural disasters, like Hurricane Ian, can destroy you. But YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS…can never be taken from you.
Romans 8:38, 39.
