In happened in a shoe store! In Boston a young troubled 18 year old needed a job and successfully convinced his uncle to give him one working retail at the shoe store. The uncle only had one condition that he attend Sunday School with him at the Mount Vernon Congregational Church. The Sunday School teacher at that church was a man by the name of Edward Kimbell.
Mr. Kimbell had a plan he was going to come by the shoe store mid week and talk to this troubled youth about the Lord!
When the time he had prepared for came Mr. Kimbell got nervous that maybe he was coming at the wrong time. He walked past the story thinking about what to say. He was concerned that he might embaris the boy in front of his other peers and they might make fun of him for being good boy. Finally Mr. Kimbell got up the couage and just decied to go back and go strait in and talk to the boy.
Edward Kimbell later recalled the event saying, “I don't know just what words I used, nor could the boy tell. I simply told him of Christ's love for him, and the love Christ wanted in return. That was all there was. It seemed the young man was just ready for the light that then broke upon him, and there in the back of that shoe store in Boston a life was transferred out of the kingdom of darkness and into the kingdom of God’s beloved Son.
Mr. Kimbell had a plan it was not much it it was enough. He was outside the shoe store trembling in his boots but his plan got him there and forced him to walk to the back and talk to the boy. He was prepared and thus it happen in a shoe store.
There is a lot of anxiety in our culture because people believe that something bad is about to happen. This is reflected in our movies they are very dis-topic. This is also reflected in the prepper culture that we live in these days.
This is a sermon about shoes and being prepared. Because this text is about being prepared.
The shoes are not the shoes of the gospel they are not even the shoes of the gospel of peace. They are the readiness of the gospel of peace or this word could also be translated perpetration.

There are 2 functions that the readiness of the gospel of peace shoes have for us.
They make it possible for us to share the gospel. These boots are made for walking.
Look at what Jesus said to his disciples when He called them in the Synoptic Gospels. Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.
2. They help us to stand firm with sure footing no matter the battle we are engaged in.
The Roman soldiers shoes were designed to give them good traction when facing the foe.
Their shoes were made with soft leather with studded soles. not only could they march farther and faster but they could dig in and find exceptional balance when they fought hand in hand.
The heavy sandals worn by Roman soldiers had soles made of several layers of leather studded with hollow-headed hobnails,
for Christians are pictured in vv. 10–16 as standing, not advancing. Instead this refers to a believer’s stability or surefootedness from the gospel which gives him peace so he can stand in the battle.
This truth we often forget but the gospel is not only designed to save us it is also designed to encourage us. Knowing you are saved and your sins are forgiven brings peace. That is why these shoes are called the shoes of the gospel of peace.
In light of this, believers who are to be ready or prepared to stand against the onslaughts of the evil forces must be firmly grounded in the gospel of peace
Their certainty or “surefootedness” results in tranquility of the mind and security of the heart and enables them to stand against the devil and his angelic hosts.
Lets talk about what these shoes are not. They are not for running away.
Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.
For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Big Idea: If you are prepared with the gospel then you don't have to be prepared for anything else.
The gospel is not just to share with others but also to share with ourselves.
