After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.
In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water.
For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had.
The earliest manuscripts didn’t have this assertion, late it was added in order to explain the stirring of the water.
But the stirring of the water was more then likely superstition.
Maybe it had some curative qualities.
That would be a cruel way to heal people.
I could imagine some of the arguments that would take place, trying to be healed.
Some of the fights. The rudeness it could produce.
Maybe even hatred for your brother. For jumping in before you.
Buying Jordans
I remember when Jordan would drop a new shoe. And these shoe stores had lines wrapped around the corner. But they only had a limited supply in sizes and shoes. So people would fist fight steal. Even robbed and killed for this shoes. They bought the lie that these shoes would increase my worth as a human being.
Black Friday
Same with middle class america would fist fight on black friday for a 50 dollar 42 inch tv, Old ladys mother of three would be fist fight for these things.
We think we don’t have the same superstitions because we are so sophisticated. But we do.
They just manifest themselves allot differently.
Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years.
He was a man of great hopelessness. 38 years in this condition.
I was talking to someone and they where back and forth wrestling with addiction. Very down and hopeless. Wondering when will it end.
He was a lonely hopeless individual.
This was a hopeless case 38 years. Maybe he should had given up. Through the towel.
How long have you been dealing with some kind of sin.
Are you ready to throw in the towel.
Maybe a hardship and you are ready to hang it up.
Hebrews 12:3-5 “For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;”
John 5:6 (NKJV)
When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”
This is a strange question
Jesus wants to focus the attention on the man.
He wanted to stimulate his will and raise his hopes.
Jesus wanted to bring awareness to his sickness.
Mans greatest problem is that hes not aware that hes sick or he doesn’t to be cured,
Isaiah 1:5-6 “Why should you be stricken again? You will revolt more and more. The whole head is sick, And the whole heart faints. From the sole of the foot even to the head, There is no soundness in it, But wounds and bruises and putrefying sores; They have not been closed or bound up, Or soothed with ointment.”
Luke 5:31 “Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.”
Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.
The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”
Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.”
