Introduction

Theology Focus: A desperate man with humility moved Jesus with compassion to heal him.
Mark 1:39 “He went into all of Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.”
Galilee- Galilee was known in ancient times as an excellent region for producing wheat. It was also known for its production of olive oil
Synagogue- v21, 29-
Basically a meeting place
People also met for worship on the 2nd and 5th days of the week and sabbath
Prayer such as eighteen benediction (deu 6:4-8; 11:13-21; and Numb 15:37-41
reading the law was significant
reciting the law and studying the commandments
Anyone could read and expound portions of the text ( that’s why Jesus read and preach in there also)
I. Everybody needs somebody to save them: desperate
TEXT
Capernaum: Free from the possessor (Mk 1:23)
Demon
Characters of Demon
They work by lying, deciet, and opression and when the opportunity arises they enter the body of a person and control others
Jesus didn’t let them speak ( filthy and not worthy to call out the name of the holiness)
V.32b and 34b and v 39 (demon- possed and drove out many)
Demons or unclean spirit always appears after synagogues
When there is holy place, there’s also unholy
Capernaum: Free from oppressor (Mk 1:30)
Fever (sickness) - Simon’s Mother In-law Mk 1:31 “So he went to her, took her by the hand, and raised her up. The fever left her, and she began to serve them.”
Luke Emphasize (high fever)
Jesus didn’t say anything (He raised her up and the fever left)
Jesus Healed many ways: Unphysical contacts: Matt 8:13 “Then Jesus told the centurion, “Go. As you have believed, let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that very moment.”
Physical contact: Mk 1:31 and Mk 1:41 “Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched him. “I am willing,” he told him. “Be made clean.”
Relevent: Who you need and who you run to will determine weather you are going to be safe or not.
(Illustration): A man was driving. his gas is almost empty (most of the time he only put his gas when the sign show up) so he decided to stop by gas station. He supposed to put a gassolin in his car, but instead he pumped Dizzel instead. the moment when he realized what he had done, it was too late for him. It was costly to repair
our iives are just like that
II. Everybody needs Humility
Seeking someone to help you is one thing, but the way you approach someone to help you is another thing.
We need humility because we have nothing good in us/full of weakness
Mark 1:40 A man with Leprosy came to him, on his knees, begged him
We do not know where this man came from but we know that
He initiate to meet Jesus, get on his knee
Kneel .the concrete imagery of the OT expresses weakness or fear ( Is. 35:3)
This actions may indicate a sign of Respect ( 2 Kings 1:13 “Then the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. The third captain went up and fell on his knees in front of Elijah and begged him, “Man of God, please let my life and the lives of these fifty servants of yours be precious to you.”
Worship (Luke 5:8 “When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’s knees and said, “Go away from me, because I’m a sinful man, Lord!””
Submission to superior
We need humility because we know we can’t help ourselves
A sick person can’t heal a sick person, only the doctor able to heal a sick person.
and a sick person would put all of his faith to a good doctor who could heal him or her
That’s why in Mark 1:40, He said, “if you are willing, you can make me clean”
this leprosy put his faith in Jesus.
How come he put his faith in Jesus?
Romans 10:17 “So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ.”
Mark 1:28 (capernaum- unclean spirit— the news about him spread throught the entire vicinity of Galilee(Mark 1:33 (the whole town was assembled at the door) Mark 1:37 (everyone is looking for you)
Jesus was preaching, drove out demons, heal the sick— many people came to him. Of course Jesus was Famous
This is probably why he had faith in Jesus
Revelent:
For those who would learn God’s ways, humility is the first thing, humility is the second, humility is the third.
St Augustine of Hippo
Humility is a medicine that heal an illness of pride
Illustration: two cokes in the bottle; when there is no humilation, everything explode.
III. Everybody needs Compassion
Mark 1:40 ( Leprosy came to him and on his knees, begged him “if you are willing, you can make me clean”
We know that this guy need someone to save him, we know he approached Jesus with humility and faith
What do we really know about his conditions?
Leprosy: Symbolize distugsing sin. leprosy (known as Hansen’s disease), which this leper probably had, is caused by a specific bacterial infection which attacks skin, flesh, eyes and nerves, often producing sores and loss of feeling in a person’s fingers or toes, thus leading to destructive lesions.
If this disease aren’t treated, the nerve damage can result in crippling of hands and feet, paralysis, and blindness.
The cure is compare to Raising the Dead
When the leprosy humble and have faith in Jesus, when he begged, “if you are willing, you can make me clean”
Jesus was moved with compassion, he know the pain this person have to go through.
When look at Leviticus 13:45-46 ““The person who has a case of serious skin disease is to have his clothes torn and his hair hanging loose, and he must cover his mouth and cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean!’ He will remain unclean as long as he has the disease; he is unclean. He must live alone in a place outside the camp.”
This guy have to live alone, no interaction with other human. How painful is that going to be.
As human we are build to have relationship, communication
Jesus was moved by his act and his faith
Mark 1:41 Jesus reached out his hand and touched him and said “I am willing be made clean”
A compassion that has hand to reach out others
This guy probably haven’t get to feel the touch of human long time ago
With love and compassion, Jesus touched him and made him clean.
and immediately the leprosy left him and he was made clean. Now he become a living person.
Just like this leprosy, we we once dead in sin, but because our compassionate and loving God, we were heal through Jesus Christ.
Revelence: Compassion is not in everyone, but when we have ( TAH DOH THU DO THA) we are able to give birth to compassion.
Illustration: A husband was nagging his wife for not doing enough. every time when he come back to work, he will alwasy be nagging. Although She did the chore, cook, clean, take the trash, taking of the kids. he didn’t see it. He was blind with his ego. So one day his wife had enough, so she decided to move out. At first, he was so happy. A week later, he was super depress. (most guy like like him would be happy at first) but then he got depress because his house was a mass. That’s when he realised what he did to his wife. The day when he have to clean and cook, he is able to have compassion in his heart.
Having a compassion on someone is almost the same as loving your neighbour as you love yourself.
Application: We might need a lot of things in live and ask God to help us. But we must ask him not in our will but his will
How do we know the will of God?’
paul reminded us in
Romans 12:1-2 “Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”
When we live a holy life, we will be able to accept what our Created has planned for us.
How do you live a holy life?
doing what is pleasing God
IF we are not pleasing God, we are pleasing Satan
How do we please God?
have faith in God
Gen 5:24 “Enoch walked with God; then he was not there because God took him.”
Heb 11:5 “By faith Enoch was taken away, and so he did not experience death. He was not to be found because God took him away. For before he was taken away, he was approved as one who pleased God.”
Evil was around him but he chose God
Conclusion: Everyone needs something in life weather, someone to save them, Humility, or compassion, but not everyone is willing to do what it takes or able to accept the will of God. As we are believers, we must accept the will of God, living a holy life and Increase our faith in Him.
