Recap

2 Weeks Ago we imagined
The most impatient person in the world
terrible person
bad friend
bad parent
bad spouse
associated with villains
A characteristic of love
1 Corinthians 13:4 ESV
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant
Looked Saul. He is King
Samuel tells him to go to a place and wait for him so they can sacrifice to God before entering a battle.
Saul offers sacrifice himself,
1 Samuel 13:13–14 ESV
And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, with which he commanded you. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
Q: What could you have lost because you have not waited on God?
It may result in
Being Out of God’s Will
Next Chapter God rejects Saul as King
Delayed/Denied Blessings
Pain - Ourselves and others
Lets see the opposite play out.
God tells Samuel go to Jesse
1 Samuel 16:6–8 ESV
When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”
None of the 7 sons there are selected.
1 Samuel 16:11–13 ESV
Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
Q: Lets imagine you are David in this situation.
You are
Youngest
Not take seriously
Not invited
Probably picked on
You have just had Samuel pour oil on your head and anoint you to be King of Israel.
What do you do next? What do you expect to happen?
God sent a spirit to torment Saul and the way to give him peace is for someone to play an insturment
Lyre
Who played the lyre in the town? David
1 Samuel 16:21–23 ESV
And David came to Saul and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer. And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Let David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight.” And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him.
Q: Whats happening here?
Imagine yourself in David’s place. You were anointed to be King. Now you are asked to play your instrument for the King.
Right after this, David fights Goliath. Goliath the giant who no one was willing to fight.
1 Samuel 17:23–25 ESV
As he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines and spoke the same words as before. And David heard him. All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were much afraid. And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel. And the king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father’s house free in Israel.”
David steps up to fight Goliath and he kills him and cuts his head off. This won David favor with the people
1 Samuel 18:5–7 ESV
And David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him, so that Saul set him over the men of war. And this was good in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s servants. As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments. And the women sang to one another as they celebrated, “Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands.”
Q: What is happening here?
Patience isnt just about giving you what you want magically. If God magically appointed David King who would follow him?
God was preparing the people for what He was going to award David with.
From here Saul tries to kill David because of his jealousy.
David is able to avoid it all and God still blesses David with success even when he is still not King yet.
From here Saul’s daighters want to marry David
The groom was required to pay a price for the bride. Davids family is poor.
Saul plans to allow David to be killed, ask for 100 foreskins
David brings back 200
Saul continues to try and kill David. David’s wife, Saul’s daughter helps him escape
Then again Jonathan, Saul’s son helps David escape when Saul tries to kill him.
Now David goes through many parts of the surrounding lands and tries to hide.
Some hide him and others do not.
With this knowlegde David knows who is for him and who is not, even before he officially becomes King
Point - Sometimes in the wait God provides you knowledge and experience that will allow you to be successful when the wait is at an end.
1 Samuel 24:3–7 ESV
And he came to the sheepfolds by the way, where there was a cave, and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting in the innermost parts of the cave. And the men of David said to him, “Here is the day of which the Lord said to you, ‘Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.’ ” Then David arose and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. And afterward David’s heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord’s anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord’s anointed.” So David persuaded his men with these words and did not permit them to attack Saul. And Saul rose up and left the cave and went on his way.
Saul saw what David did and repented for a short time but wanted David killed after some time passed.
1 Samuel 26:7–12 ESV
So David and Abishai went to the army by night. And there lay Saul sleeping within the encampment, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head, and Abner and the army lay around him. Then Abishai said to David, “God has given your enemy into your hand this day. Now please let me pin him to the earth with one stroke of the spear, and I will not strike him twice.” But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can put out his hand against the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless?” And David said, “As the Lord lives, the Lord will strike him, or his day will come to die, or he will go down into battle and perish. The Lord forbid that I should put out my hand against the Lord’s anointed. But take now the spear that is at his head and the jar of water, and let us go.” So David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul’s head, and they went away. No man saw it or knew it, nor did any awake, for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from the Lord had fallen upon them.
