Why Do We Need Government?
Why Do We Need Government?
We are all looking for good government. Good Leadership. Someone we can trust to care of our interests.
We are all looking for good government. Good Leadership. Someone we can trust to care of our interests.
The Bible is no stranger to the subject.
We find that in 1Samuel 8 God’s people ask for a king. Like the other nations.
The prophet Samuel’s sons weren’t doing a good job as Judges so the people asked for a king.
Now it came to pass when Samuel was old that he made his sons judges over Israel.
The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba.
But his sons did not walk in his ways; they turned aside after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice.
Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah,
and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
The two young men turned away from God and were dishonest. Why? isn’t it human corruption at its best.
When one man fails we turn to another man… Some one who will judge us like all the nations…
The people themselves prophesied their future.
God’s desire is that we would be His people and He would be our God!
God carries in Himself Government!
For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
Jesus came to Fix our Government Problem!
Jesus came to Fix our Government Problem!
After so many failures by the kings and the people. God’s people had lost their land and now lived under and oppressive regime. Jesus came to restore God’s Kingdom on the earth.
From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
Jesus preached the Kingdom of God
but He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.”
Jesus Came to preach, announce, The Kingdom of God is Here!
Now it came to pass, afterward, that He went through every city and village, preaching and bringing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with Him,
But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.
And He sent His disciples to proclaim the kingdom of God
And heal the sick there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
God’s people here in the text wanted a human to rule over them.
But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel prayed to the Lord.
And the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.
The Voice of the People is not the Voice of God. But God has given us free will to choose.
According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even to this day—with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also.
They Rejected the Man of God
Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and show them the behavior of the king who will reign over them.”
So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who asked him for a king.
And he said, “This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and appoint them for his own chariots and to be his horsemen, and some will run before his chariots.
The Cost of Government - Your sons will work for him to build his kingdom.
He will appoint captains over his thousands and captains over his fifties, will set some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.
He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers.
Your daughters will serve him.
And he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants.
He will take the best of your fields and vineyards
He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and give it to his officers and servants.
You will pay taxes
And he will take your male servants, your female servants, your finest young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work.
Your workers and servants will serve him, Your animals
He will take a tenth of your sheep. And you will be his servants.
And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord will not hear you in that day.”
Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us,
that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.”
And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he repeated them in the hearing of the Lord.
So the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed their voice, and make them a king.”
And Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Every man go to his city.”
God’s Government is different. It is real and present today
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”
Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation;
nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.”
