The State At The Beginning

Man’s Purpose and Work

Genesis 2:15 (KJV 1900)

And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

A Singular Command (The Positive & The Negative)

Genesis 2:16–17 (KJV 1900)

And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Do you work for someone else’s company? When you work for them, do they let you just: go and do whatever you want, say whatever you want to clients and customers, and not accomplish anything worthy of their hire? Or do they have certain regular expectations of you, both positive and negative. Do this, don’t do that… They give you parameters for your hire.

God gave Adam the right and proper expectations, or boundaries, or parameters you could say for what to do, and what not to do.

A Regular Relationship

And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

This wasn’t the first time God was walking in that garden. He knew when was the perfect time to walk through it. God was seeking Adam and Eve, just as he normally would have done on any other day.

Have you ever had a child that you suddenly realized was missing. We (humans) feel a sense of fear, panic, and anxiety, wondering where our child is, and what is happening to them. When a child wanders off at a grocery store, or in a mall, sometimes parents frantically begin searching and seeking for their lost child. They are desperate to find them, and know that they are safe, and returned to their loving relationship with them as their parent and protector.

A Dire Consequence

And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

A Hope for the Helpless

God Wants Man to Recognize Man’s Need for God

The ungodly are not so: But are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: But the way of the ungodly shall perish.

A Great Betrayal

And there stood before them seventy men of the ancients of the house of Israel, and in the midst of them stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan, with every man his censer in his hand; and a thick cloud of incense went up. Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? for they say, The Lord seeth us not; the Lord hath forsaken the earth.

He said also unto me, Turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations that they do. Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the Lord’s house which was toward the north; and, behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz.

A Great Grace

Introduction - Just as God pictured the redemption of Gomer Hosea’s wife, God extends grace and redemption to every person in mankind.

Hosea 3 (KJV 1900)

Then said the Lord unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the Lord toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine.

So I bought her to me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an homer of barley, and an half homer of barley: And I said unto her, Thou shalt abide for me many days; thou shalt not play the harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man: so will I also be for thee.

For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim: Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the Lord their God, and David their king; and shall fear the Lord and his goodness in the latter days.

A Redemptive Grace

Romans 9:23–26 (KJV 1900)

And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.

A Free Grace

Romans 5:15 (KJV 1900)

But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

An Unlimited Grace

Romans 8:38–39 (KJV 1900)

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

A Faith Filled Grace

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
