We Are Worshipers of God
Colossians 3:14-17
INTRODUCTION
ILLUSTRATION- Psalty the Songbook
6th or 7th grade- Dad needed a soloist for the lead, Psalty the Song Book.
Growing up the son of a music minister.
Singing was part of life.
When my sister and I were little, people would comment about how loud we would sing the hymns.
Singing and playing music may have come natural, but worship did not.
Singing is not worship and worship is not singing.
Singing can be worship. The difference is the heart. Why you sing? Who is the audience?
“Guided by God’s Word, Del Norte Baptist Church is a united community of believers worshiping God, growing in faith, and sharing Christ’s love.”
Colossians 3:14–17 ESV
14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

4 Declarations of Spiritual Worship

1- Worship Declares Church Unity (3:14-15)

Colossians 3:14–15 ESV
14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
Unity doesn’t drive us to glorify ourselves. Unity drives us to glorify God.
Come together in unity to worship the same God.
Nehemiah 8:1–2 ESV
1 And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the Lord had commanded Israel. 2 So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month.
Nehemiah 8:5–6 ESV
5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and as he opened it all the people stood. 6 And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
Worship has been a war in churches for decades. It only proves that we worship ourselves and not God.
If we cannot unite over worship we have no reason to call ourselves a church.
First Declaration of Spiritual Worship is Church Unity
Second Declaration of Spiritual Worship is God’s Value

2- Worship Declares God’s Value (3:15, 16, 17)

Thanksgiving/Praise
Colossians 3:15 ESV
15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
Colossians 3:16 ESV
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Colossians 3:17 ESV
17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Give Thanks- Praise Him for who he is and all he has done.
Singing and prayer.
Mark 12:30 ESV
30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
Psalm 29:1–2 ESV
1 Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.
Jesus is worthy of praise.
Colossians 1:15–20 ESV
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
If we don’t praise him, the rocks will cry out.
Triumphal Entry
Luke 19:40 ESV
40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
This Thanksgiving is in song and voice.
Our prayers are part of our worship.
In our statement do not think of worship as only singing.
Prayer is an important part of our worship to God.

3- Worship Declares God’s Truth (3:16)

Colossians 3:16 ESV
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
2 Results of Being “Guided by God’s Word”
Teach in Wisdom
Singing in Praise
There is a place for all types of songs, as long as they are guided by God’s Word.
There are some modern songs that are weak.
There are some hymns that are weak.
Spirit and Truth- Woman at the well
John 4:21–24 ESV
21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Worship is a spiritual act grounded in truth.

4- Worship Declares God’s Rule (3:17)

Colossians 3:17 ESV
17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
If God is in charge then we must surrender.
“Lord Jesus”- everything in obedience.
Everything we do is for God’s glory.
Work is worship.
Cleaning is worship.
Paying bills is worship.
Parenting is worship.
Romans 12:1 ESV
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
“living sacrifice”= denying self for Jesus.
David Cao- Gave up the money and security of living in the US to return to China to start an underground seminary where he got no pay. In prison today for taking those students on mission to neighboring countries.
CONCLUSION
Jesus cannot be your Lord and you refuse to worship.
Truly surrender to him. Give him all of you.
Romans 10:9 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Is your worship an act of surrender to God?
